Page Twelve THE MICHIGAN DAILY City planS (Continued from Page 1) -No-passing areas of such streets will be denoted by the addition of a solid yellow line flanking the broken yellow line; -Double yellow lines will 'un down the center of multi-lane, two-way streets; -Traffic lanes moving in the same direction will be separat- ed by broken white lines, and -Center lane/ left turn only lanes will be marked on both sides by broken yellow and solid yellow lines. In addition to the new pave- ment paint-job, traffic signs will receive a face-lift with a con- tinental twist. International symbol-signs are being phased in and will re- place the familiar written signs. The new signs will be color- coded by the nature of the mes- sage. For example, red indi- cates prohibited activity, green -,permitted movements or direc- tions, yellow - warning, orange - construction or maintenance warnings. Such signs as "No Left Turn" or "No U Turn" will be re- placed with ones depicting the new signs prohibited action with a circle and slash superimposed upon it. For those who find these signs rather cryptic at first, Cuendet assures that smaller, written "advisory signs" will be placed underneath the new signs "un- til reonle get educated to the change" - about six months by his estimation. While the new system may seem a rather confusing imposi- ties on the driving public the notice and the Traffic Engineer- t endeTranseortation Depart- ment feel it is a step in the right direction. "The states used to have dif- ferent signs and different mark- ings," says Corporal Arthur H~ughea. "It used to be a white line would mean one thing in one state and another thing in another." Maybe, but tell that to the poor driver speeding down the highway who goes to make a left turn and suddenly freezes, real- izing he doesn't know where to go or what to do. As one puzzled motorist remarks, "It may be a good thing, but nobody's ever going to be able to understand it." DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN CAREER PLANNING & PLACEMENT 3200 s.A.B.
