Two men were killed in early morning gun battles. A factory and a laundry were blasted by bombs, but no casualties were reported. The cease-fire ordered Mon- day night by the IRA's Official Wing bolstered faint hopes of peace in the province. But the IRA's Provisional fac- tion pledged to continue its bloody campaign aimed at tie withdrawal of British troops ad at uniting the largely Protestant province with the Catholic Trish republic. Provisional chief of staff Sean Ma cStiofain said in Dublin his guerrillas would continue 'teir attacks for "the same tactical and strategic reasons." The Official wing's suspenson of attacks followed peace moves by war-weary Catholic women. The Provisionals' explosive re- action apeared to be the sart of a fierce struggle between the oposing wings of the IRA to win support of the Catholic minority in the province. British troops fought at least 13 gun battles with guerrillas in the Catholic Ardoyne district of Belfast, a Provisional stronghold, two hours after the cease-fire was announced. They claimed they hit four gunmen. One sld- ier was critically wounded in the back. Security au- thorities speculated that the P:o- visionals were either fighting their rivals, the Officials, or er"e shooting at snipers hidden in ,he Protestant zones ~which encircle Ardoyne. Another Catholic man died af- ter a shootout near Banbridge, 25 miles south of the city. As the Provisionals battled to undermine the truce, the fledg- ling peace movement continued its work in the IRA stronghold of the province's second c i t y Londonderry.
