Thursday, May 25, 1972 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Nine Thursday, May 25, 1972 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Nine 'IT STILL SINKS' Army cgoat' truck loses footing WASHINGTON (MP)-The Ar- my conceded to a House inves- tigating subcommittee yester- day that its new truck, de- signed to roar through combat and water, has tripled in cost and still has a tendency to sink. Maj. Gen. Vincent Ellis, Army deputy for materiel acquisition, acknowledged also that the first 4,400 center-jointed, 6-wheel- drive Gama Goat trucks deliv- ered to the Army were sent straight to warehouses to await correction of steering, engine suspension and other problems. Chairman Otis Pike, D-N. Y.), of a special House Ared Services subcommittee created to investigate the Gama Goat, said the manufacturer, Consoli- dated Diesel Electric Co., was asked during field tests to look into complaints the truck some- times buckled in the water and sank but the company conclud- ed no such condition existed. "This assurance may have satisfied the project manager," Pike said, "but it did nothing to keep the Goat afloat. In field tests it continued to sink." Ellis told the subcommittee he could not dispute that or any of Pike's other complaints against the truck. The general said cost of the trucks has risen to "just under $15,000" apiece from the origi- nal estimate of $5,000 and blam- ed the increase equally on Army Angela Davis defense rests SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP - T h e defense in the Angela Davis case rested its case yesterday after calling 12 witnesses in three days and declining to call Davis to testify in her murder-kidnap- conspiracy trial. The prosecution, which h a d called 95 witnesses over seven weeks, said it probably would present a few rebuttal witnesses to answer the defense's case. The surprise witness at the end of the defense presentation was Soledad Brother Fleeta Drumgo. The convict, brought to court in chains, testified that he knew of no plan to invade Marin County Civic Center in efforts to free him and two oth- er black inmates known as the Soledad Brothers. Davis is charged with engi- neering the alleged plot, which ended with the death of four persons in a shootout. Superior Court Judge Richard Arnason granted the prosecution a one-day recess to summon re- buttal witnesses, and ordered a special court session tomorrow. Other defense witnesses plac- ed Davis away from the crime scene the week before the shootings and stated that Jona- than had easy access to guns they said Davis bought for the Soledad Brothers Defense Com- mittee headquarters. Ellis insisted that "in its as- signed role, the Gaia Goat will perform better than any other vehicle known in the world to- day" and said "the Gama Goat program has been a successful one." Pike read field reports of the new trucks experiencing 180 failures at Ft. Carson, Colo., in- cluding burnt-out starters, bro- ken universal joints, cracked windshields and bent tailgates that negated the trucks' am- phibious capabilities. A General Accountings Gifice report put into the subcom- mittee's record also listed prob- lems with overheating engines, engine failure, center differen- tial failure, steering problems, suspension failures, front dif- ferential malfunctions, and fan- belt, transmission, and acceler- ator problems. The general and Lt. Col. Don- ald Babers, Gama Goat project manager, refused to give details after the hearing but Babers said nisone of the trucks has sunk in regular use. "We've had nohsinking of Gats" Goats in the hands of troops," Babers said.
