Wednesday, May 10, 1972 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Poge Thirteen Israeli troops rescue hostages on hijacked Belgian jetliner4, TEL AVIV (P - Israeli para- troopers disguised as mechanics burst into a hijacked Belgian jetliner yesterday, killing two Arab hijackers, capturing two others, and releasing 97 host- ages. The rescuers took over the plane, which the Arab guer- illas had threatened to blow up with all aboard, 21 hours after it had landed at Tel Aviv International Airport. The hijackers had demanded that Israel free from 100-300 Arab guerilla prisoners, a n d fly them to Cairo in exchange for the lives of the plane's pas- sengers. The two male hijackers were shot to death, and the two fe- male hijackers - one seri:tusly wounded - were captured when 18 combat troops took over the plane. Two of the soldiers, and 6 passengers were wounded in the assault. Passengers said the hijackers took control of the Sabena air- craft over Zagreb, Yugoslavia, on Monday after a stop in Vien- na, Austria, on a flight from Brussels to Tel Aviv. To approach the plane, t h e troops concealed their guns be- neath white overalls and pre- tended to be mechanics repair- ing the jetliner. Hours earlier, during t h e night, the air escaped from the plane's tires and the ydraulic system, for some of its wheels had been drained, crippling the jetliner so it could not take off for Cairo. The white-clad troops clamber- ed onto the plane, burst open the doors and opened fire. Passeng- ers said the guerrilla chieftain, who called himself Capt. Rafat and wore a wig, was hit immed- itely between the eyes. - - ------ ---- The other male terrorist was killed in a blast of gunfire. Ore woman hijacker was hit and the interior of the passenger cabin was sprayed with blood. The pilot, Capt. Reginald Levy, climbed out of the plane woth blood over his hands, but lie was smiling. "Thanks very much. It' a lovely day," he told Defense Minister Moche Dayan, Lt. Gen. David Elazar, Israel's Chief of Staff, and four other generals who stood beside the plane. This is the second time t h e Israelis have killed to 4tcp a hijacking, and the first time Arab hijackers were netted in- side Israel. In September, 1970, Israeli security guards shir and killed Patrick Arguello, an American who had tried to take over an El Al 707 en route from Tel Aviv .to New York. A statement issued in Beirut said the hijackers eore members of the Black September Organ- ization, an underground Pales- tinian group named for the Sep- tember, 1970, civil war in Jordan. The Black Septemberists claim the assassination of Jordanian Prime Minister Wasfi Tell last year in Cairo was carried out by members of their group. "If other countries acted the way we did hijackings would stop," said Elazar. "We have succeeded," Prem- ier Golda Meir told parliament. "The government assumed the responsibility of not submitting to violence and blackmail, and not releasing hundreds of deta'n- ed killers," she added. "But the danger of destruction hung over the heads of 10 pc-o- ple. The government was fully aware of the terrible signifi- cance of surrendering to the ter- rorist."
