A forecast of rain was expected to cut into the throng of people expected for the picnic-type gathering on the infield, but an offtrack condition wasn't expected to affect the best horses in the field. Bee Bee Bee and Freetex, 15-1 choices in the prerace odds, and Hassi's Image, listed at 20-1, were the most likely to be affected by a slow un- der-footing. Riva Ridge, with 10 victories in 13 career starts, goes into the Preakness with earnings of $702,210 and could add $137,300 to the total by winning. If nine start, the gross purse would be $189,800. Television coverage is scheduled from 4 p.m-y p.m. and radio coverage from 4:25 p.m.-4:45 p.m., both on CBS. With only four starts in 1972, Riva Ridge was well poised to become the first Triple Crown cham- pion since Citation in 1948, as trainer Lucien Lau- rin deliberately restricted his activity early in the season. And if they make good on it, I'm gone. They'll have themselves a hockey player," Hull told the Chicago Tribune. Hull said that if Winnipeg comes up with the money, "there's no chance for me to stay in Chicago." Hull is seeking $1 million in advance of the first year's service and another million for more years of play. Hull commented it would just be good business to accept such an offer and added "it's the first time in the last 15 years I've felt needed." * EAST LANSING, Mich. - J. Burt Smith was named Michi- gan State athletic director yesterday in a moveup from his former post as assistant and acting director. The appointment came on a unanimous vote of the eight-mem- ber board of trustees without trustee comment. Smith succeeds Clarence "Biggie" Munn, forced into retire- ment after 18 years on the job by a stroke suffered last summer. Smith, 55, has been assistant director since 1965, and was an assistant coach under football boss Duffy Daugherty, MSU's head coach. . CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The chancellor at the University of Illinois yesterday ordered the school's own Athletic Association immediately to make a "comprehensive investigation" of Illini ath- letic policies and practices already under scrutiny by the Big Ten and the NCAA. Wednesday, Big Ten commissioner Wayne Duke disclosed "ath- letic practices", presumably involving basketball recruiting, were being probed jointly by his conference and the NCAA. J. W. Peltason, Illinois chancellor, directed Gene Vance, the school's "lame duck" athletic director, to request J. G. Thomas, as the Athletic Association's legal counsel, to assume responsobility for the investigation.
