RAUPP Cam pfitters 521 SOUTH ASHLEY, ANN ARBOR 769-5574 I The Michigan Wolverine bats- men swing into the final stretch of their Big Ten campaign this weekend with the hope that they can wrap up the runners-up posi- tion to conference champion, Iowa. Today, the Wolverines (7- 3) visit Wiscinson (5-6) for a twinbill that will start at 2 p.m., while Northwestern (9-5) hosts Michigan for another double- header tomorrow to conclude the season for both teams. In addition to the Wolverines, both Northwestern and Michi- gan State (7-3) also have a shot to secure second place. Although Coach Moby Bene- dict's squad is concentrating on that second place spot, there are still a number of team and in- dividual titles that are at stake in these last four games. Currently Michigan is riding high in newly released Big Ten statistics. The team itself leads the league in hitting with a sparkling .312 mark. And hurler Mickey Elwood, although just 2- 2 on the season, boasts the low- est ERA, a brilliant 0.92. Nevertheless, these statistical leaders are quite susceptible to fluctuation as MSU pitcher Brad Van Pelt is breathing down El- wood's neck with a 0.93 arned run average and Nortnwestern is second to the Wolverines with a team batting mark of ,301. Although Benedict made no of- ficial announcement of which starter he will use bot h days, it is fairly certain taat Pete Helt, Mike Forhan, ief';hander Tom Joyce, and Elwood will get the nod. Joyce, the west toil- ing of the bunch, leads Michigan in innings hurled with 41, while posting a 3-2 record and an ERA of 3.05. Against the Badgers, Michigan should see action against south- paws Andy Otting (6-2, ERA 2.2) and Dan Domski (2-5, ERA 3.14). For the Badgers' sake, these two had better be able to con- Lain the Michigan attack for the Wisconsin offense, outside of two players, seems to be lack- ing talent. Tom Shipley, who fields both shortstop and centerfield, is bat- ting a strong .351 and his 46 hits puts him third on the Badgers' all time hit parade behind Harv- ey Kuenn's 48 in 1952, and Rick Reichard's 47 in 1964. Besides for Shipley, only Greg Mahlberg, a hird baseman, seems to hit with authority, batting .301. Against Northwestern, hitting should be the name of the game as evidenced by both squads team batting averages. The Wildcats sport two especially talented sluggers in third base- man, Ed Grzelakowski, leading the Big Ten in hitting with a .467 average and second sack- er, John McCarthy swinging at a .444 clip, good for third in the league. The Wolverines counter w it h Brian Balaze, with a team lead- ing .407 mark, MarktCrane at .400 and Greg Buss, who plays basketball in the off season, at .357. Aseep of the four games woild assure Michigan of at least a tie for second place. The Spartans of Michigan State wind up things with a pair today at Northwestern and two against Wisconsin tomorrow. The only other action this weekend pits Indiana (2-11) against O h io State (4-10) in a battle to remain out of the conference's deg house.
