Friday, August 16, 1974 Birds, Tribe win, gain on Red Sox By The Associated Press BALTIMORE - Earl Wil- liams and Paul Blair socked solo, home runs in support of Mike Cuellar's six-hit pitching and the Baltimore left-hander beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 last night for his first victory since July 20. The Orioles failed in the third to score after loading the bases with one out, but Williams con- nected for his ninth homer of the baseball season in the fourth and Blair slammed his 13th an inning later off loser Jim Kaat, 13-10. Cuellar, 14-9, ending a three- game losing streak, struck out a personal season high of ten, including Dick Allen three times. He yielded a run in the seventh on two walks and a single by Buddy Bradford. CLEVELAND - F r a n k Duffy's two - out, bases-loaded single provided two runs and Gaylord Perry gained his 16th victory as the Cleveland In- dians defeated the Minnesota Twins 4-2 in American League baseball last night. Perry, 16-7, who won 15 con- secutive games earlier this sea- son but has been trying to get No. 16 since July 3, allowed five hits. The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Tom McCraw scored on a fielder's choice. The Twins tied the game in the fourth when Tony Oliva hit his 11th home run of the season. THE INDIANS went ahead 3-1 in the sixth inning, John Ellis doubled with two oats. Minnnesota starter Bert Blylev. en, 11-14, then walked Oscar Gamble and McCraw to load the bases. Duffy then lined a single to left, scoring Ellis and Gamble. The Indians scored an insur- ance run in the eighth inning on McCraw's sacrifice fly. Danny Thompson's double down the right field line in the seventh gave the Twins their second run. Jim Betts is academic aid Jim Betts, former University of Michigan quarterback who lost most of his sight in one eye due to a swimming acci- dent, has been hired as an ath- letic counselor by the Wolver- ines. Betts, backup quarterback to Don Morehead in 1969 and starting safety in 1970, will di- rect academic counseling and tutoring service for all athletes and serve as a liaison between coaches, athletes and university academic personnel. Betts, 24, of Cleveland, was drafted by the New York Jets of the National Football League in 1971, but his eye injury end- ed his potential pro career.
