AICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven EW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Northwestern hires Pont remaining eight years and then retiring . . . I feel, however, that I now can retire without any reservation on my part about turning over the program to others." "Under Pont, I think North- western will start a winning tradition, I hope," Dye told a news conference. "I want to get back this fall for at least one game . . . I want to see Northwestern beat N o t r e Dame, or Nebraska, or both." Pont, who succeeds Dye offi- cially on Sept. 1, said he ex- pects to name an assistant ath- letic director in about two weeks. Waldo Fisher is retiring as assistant after a 5-year stay at the university. "I'm pleased and sorry to see Tippy leave because of a professional reason and a per- sonal one," said Pont, who in his first season as Wildcat coach last year compiled a 4-7 record. "The word 'dignity' is the best one I can find to describe him. "I hope to keep the team competitive. There was no problem in the transition. I have never been hindered or hampered in any sense of the word as head football coach." Announcement of the change was made by President Robert H. Strotz of the university who said, "Tippy's contributions to Northwestern's intercollegiate athletic program have been many in the past seven years." "His retirement came as no surprise to me," Strotz said. "It was Tippy who initiated the question with me for retirement this year rather than at the end of the next academic year."
