Page Twelve THE MICHIGAN DAILY Wednesday, August 7, 1974 HORTON OUT FOR SEASON Tribe trips tired Tigers, 9-7 / Michigan Daily ,Q-Sports By JOHN KAHLER Special To The Daily DETROIT - As someone undoubtedly o n c e s a i d, when troubles come, they come in legion. The Detroit Tigers received some had news last night that made their 9-7 loss to the Cleve- land Indians seem almost. inconsequential. Tiger slugger Willie Horton, who has been sidelined with a bad knee, has been forced to undergo surgery. The Tigers' only power hitter will be lost to the club for the rest of the year. As, if that wasn't bad enough, there are signs that the team's morale is crack- ing. Jim Northrup overran a single by Oscar Gamble in the ninth inning for an error that presented reliever John Hiller with a second and third with one-out situation. Hiller pitched out of the inning with no damage, however. As Northrup walked into the dugout after the inning, Hiller grabbed h i m and started throwing punches. The two had to be separated by their teammates. Cleveland starter Jim Perry did not last long, as the Tigers greeted him with four hits from their first four batters, three singles and a double, to stake Dave Lemanczyk to a 3-0 lead. Lemon Chuck made that 3-1, however, by giving up a homer to John Ellis in the second. Perry was finished off in the third, as Bill Freehan answered the insult of an intentional pass to the batter before him by lashing a three run homer into the left field stands. That made it 6-1, and should have been enough of a margin. But it wasn't. Lemanczyk could not find the plate and after two walks and a single by Ellis loaded the bases with none out in the fourth, Tiger man- ager Ralph Houk called for I er- rin LaGrow. He retired one bat- ter safely, and Dave Duncan nit what looked like a sure double play ball to short. The usually s t e a d y Eddie Brinkman fielded the ball, toss- ed to second, and missed the bag by a mile. It took but one more inning for the lead to completely evap- orate. LaGrow yielded a one out single to Frank Daffy and walked GeorgeFHendrick. A sin- gle by Charlie Spikes and yet another hit by Ellis (he was five for five on the right) tied the game and ended LaGrow's stay on the mound. Jim "Sting" Ray came on, and the Indians took the lead, as Gamble drove in Spikes. Detroit tied it in their half of the fifth, as singles by Northrup and Ben Oglivie, and sacrifice grounders by Freehan and Au- relio Rodriguez were good for a run. But Ray's first act in the sixth was to serve up s gopher ball t o second sacker John Lowenstein.
