Friday, August 2, 1974 Cey sets his sights on a Dodger pennant By The Associated Press LOS ANGELES - Ron Cey, the Los Angeles Dodgers' All- Star third baseman, occasion- ally shatters the illusion that he is merely a steady ball- player. He shattered the mold again Wednesday night when he broke his own Dodger record by driv- ing home eight runs, six of them on a pair of three-run home runs, against the San Diego Padres. Earlier this season he had seven RBIs against Chi- cago. What about the major league record of 12 in one game by St. Louis' Jim Bottomley in 1924? No, that's impossible for me," said Cey. "I'm still 33 per cent away from that. I'll take eight RBIs any day, but whether I come home with a record or not, I'm just doing my job." The man his teammates af- fectionately call "The Penguin" because his short legs and arms promote his waddling gait al- ready has 75 RBIs to go with 14 homers and a .270 batting average. A year ago, his first full major league season, he batted .245 with 15 homers and 60 runs batted in. He also gave the Dodgers their steadiest third base play since the days of Jim Gilliam almost a decade ago. But he doesn't feel he is the steadiest of the Dodger regulars this sea- son. 'Obviously, to have the record we have, there are a lot of steady players on this team," he said of the Dodgers who have a substantial lead over Cincin- nati in the National League West. Cey said he's a better player this season and so are the Dodgers as a team because they didn't win the pennant last season. "It's hard to say, you really can't project that, but I think we might not have been as good a ball club as we are now if everything had gone right. We would not have seen our mistakes as vividly as we did and might have overlooked them. I'm sorry that we didn't win, but I feel it was a good omen. "I went home last winter and thought about the things I did and didn't do. "I lost some weight," said the 5-foot-10, 185-pounder, "and I'm getting to ground balls quicker. I'm more aggressive. 'I feel pretty good about the pennant race. I'd much rather be where we are than where Cincinnati is. We have a much better mental approach this year. We were kinda going into it blind last year, most of us playing forsthe first time every day at this level." Lack of recognition might have been a gripe for Cey and other Dodger newcomers a year ago. But it's not anymore. "For me to get as many votes as I did for the All-Star team, well, they know."
