Thursday, July 25, 1974 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Illinois coach Bartow expects URBANA, Ill. (A') - Coach Gene Bartow says if fans give him the time, he will build the Illinois basketball team into a Big Ten and, possibly, national contender. "Naturally we think we can win, and may be win big this year," said the former head coach at Memphis State. "But you've got to be realistic. They (the Mlini) won five games last year." Bartow, 43, was named head coach in March, replacing Harv Schmidt, who was fired primar- ily for failing to recruit black players. Bartow made some impres- sive catches on his first try. His biggest was Audie Mat- thews, who was named to sev- eral All-America high school squads as a 6-foot-4 forward from Chicago Heights Bloom. "Matthews was one of the top four or five high school players in the country," Bar- tow said. "He's probably not going to jump in and domi- nate any league, but he can very definitely contribute to our program here" Hartow said Matthews was sought by more than 300 col- leges and narrowed the choices to three-Illinois, Purdue and UCILA. I think we wore kind of a ntral for Audio.' he added. 'We're 100 miles or so from Chicago Heights. and I think he wants to give the people back there a chance to see him play. I think he's the type of a guy who wants to be part of a build- ing program." Returning to the Illinois squad will be Rick Schmidt, whose 21-point average at for- ward last year put him third in Big Ten scoring, and Otho Tucker, a 6-foot-6 guard who sat out last season with an injury. "We're not that fa r from being a contender now. But I think we have to be realistic about our chances. A good year will mean 14, 15, 16 wins in 26 games." Bartow's first year at Illinois puts him in much the some po- sition as when he started at Memphis State. Illinois was 5-18 last year and 2-12 and last in the Big Ten. Memphis State was 6-20 the year before Bar- tow took over, but lie led them to an 18-8 mark the next year.
