It was the 11th victory in the past 12 All-Star games for the National League, which now has a 26-18-1 lead in a series it once trailed 12-4. . Garvey, who m i s s e d last weekend's games with his Los Angeles Dodgers because of the ear infection, was considered a doubtful starter until he arrived here on the eve of this 45th All. Star Game. But he insisted on playing and was an integral nary of the N's victory. For his performance, Garvey was voted the game's Most Valsable Player. Ken Brett of the Pittsburgh Pirates, a former American Leaguer, was the winning pitcher with two shutout inn- ings of relief and Luis Tiant of the Boston Red Sox was the los- er. He allowed three runs in two innings of work. Gaylord Perry, pitching for the American League allowed the first hit and first run of the game in the bottom of the sec- ond and also notched his third strikeout by fanning Johnny Bench to start the inning. Jim- my Wynn's low smash was short-hopped by shortstop Bert Campaneris, who threw him out. But Garvey singled up the middle and scored when Cey, his teammate on the Los An- geles Dodgers, doubled over Murcer's head in deep center. Thurman Munson got the AL's first hit in the third inn- ing, a leadoff double down the left field line. Campaneris struck out for the second time but Carew, running on the pitch, stole sec- ond. When catcher Bench's throw was wild and went into center field, Munson scored and Carew continued to third base. Allen brought Carew home with a sharp single be- tween third and short. The National League quickly touched Luis Tiant, the AL's new hurler, for two runs and a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Bench led off with a single to left and went to third on Wynn's single to center. Garvey ripped the first pitch down the left field line for a double that scored Bench. Wynn took third on the play and scored the go- ahead run when Cey hit a grounder to second. The NL nicked Tiant for an unearned run in the fifth inning and took a 4-2 lead. Lou Brock, batting for pitcher Ken Brett, led off by grounding a single between first and second. After bluffing a couple of starts, Brock stole second and con- tinued to third when catcher Munson threw wildly. Brock scored on Morgan's sacrifice liner to center. Smith, a fo r m e r American teaguer with Boston Red Sox and now the Cardinals, led off the bottom of the seventh with a booming home run into the right field stands. It was his first in All-Star competition. The National L e a g u e in- creased its lead to 7-2 with a pair of runs in the eighth off Rollie Fingers on a walk to Schmidt, Don Kessinger's triple and a wild pitch.
