Thursday, July 1.1, 1974 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Nine Thurday Juy 11 194 TE MIHIGN DILY ageNi. Report says' funds used to bygift (Continued from Page 3) The White House had no'im- mediate comment on the report. PUBLIC RELEASE of the re- port was authorized by the full Watergate committee. The total price of the earrings was $5,650. The report shows that $560. of the amount was paid by the President's personal check with another $90 coming from Rose Mary Woods, his per- -sonal secretary. The report did not fully ac- count for the balance of $438.62 but showed it was part of a titil $5,000 check generated by Re- bozo and made out to the jewelry firm. The money flowed in a com- plex series of transactions that began with the deposit of $6,000 in the account of the Florida Nixon For President Commit- tee," the report said. THOSE FUNDS were later transferred to the special ac- count maintained at Rebozo's Key Biscayne Bank by Thomas Wakefield who is Rebozo's tat- torney, long-time business asso- ciate and a director of the bank. According to the report, $4,- 562.38 then was moved to ,roust account maintained by Wake- field's law firm, Wakefield, Hewitt and Webster. On the same date $5,300 was withdrawn from that ace sunt and deposited in the law firm's account at the First N-ional Bank of Miami, the rep l't said and added: "ON THE SAME date s that transfer, a cashier's check was purchased . . which was fur- nished by Harry Winston, a Jeweler in New York, for the purchase of platinum and dia- mond earrings, furnished by President Nixon to his wife on her birthday." "The complex four-stage pro- cess of payment for this Yift concealed the fact that the funds originated from contributions to the 1968 campaign and were ultimately used by Rebozo on behalf of President Nixon," he renort said. It stated that Rehozo has re- fused a committee request that he provide documents showing the pttrpose of the original $6,000 transfer of campaign ftnds to the Wakefield special account. Mitchell testifies Contined from l Pue 3) seas interested in the events of March 21, 1973, the day Presi- dent Nixon and aides discussed demands for money from Water- g:ite conspirator E.. IHoward Ilsnt and also the day $75,000 was delivered to llunt's lawyer William Bittmn. TIlE COVER-UP indictment listed among the overt acts in the alleged conspiracy a tele- p h o n e conversation between Mitchell and H. R. "Bob" Hal- deman, White Htouse staff chief, at 12:30 p.m. on March 21. But Mitchell told the commit- tee the telephone call had noth- ing to do with Watergate or payments to Iunt. He said IHaldeman called to tell him the President wanted him to come to Washington. The Haldeman - Mitchell con- versation took place shortly af- ter a conversation Nixon had with Haldeman and John Dean in which the Hunt demand was discussed. ACCORDING to the Judici ory Committee transcript of that discussion, Nixon at one point, referring to the money for Hunt, said, "For Christ's sake, get it." James St. Clair, the Presi- dent's impeachment d e f e n s e lawyer, has tried to establish that the $75,000 delivered to Bitt- man the evening of March 21, was arranged for in a telephone conversation hefore the Nixon meeting. That co'ersation was be- tween De:tn and Frederick La- Rte. Bat swhen LaRste testified before the committee he was unable to soy definitely what time of day he talked to Dean. lie said he thooght it wa.s in the morning hut that it cottld have heen liter. It said Rebozo set up the first Wakefield special account on April 15, 1969. "Thomas H. Wakefield testified that he did not know that this account was opened until later when Rebozo advised him that he had esta- lishedbthe account and that they wete oth signators," the report said.
