fro m Aarc COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (M) - 'WANTED: two used baseballs and two used bats, for donation only. Contact National Baseball Hall of Fame." It isn't just any two bats and balls the Hall of Fame is seek- ing. They are the ones used when Atlanta Braves' slugger Henry Aaron hit his 714th and 7thb hoe runs earlier this year, thereby tying and surpas- sing Babe Ruth's immortal career record. Although Hall of Fame Direc- tor Ken Smith wouldn't dream of placing such an ad, he would very much like to see those balls and bats encased forever in his repository of baseball memorabilia. Smith will have to wait a while, however. As part of a million dollar contract with Magnavox, Aaron has author- ized the company use of the bats and balls, and others, for five years. "This is unusual," Smith said. "But it's a very unusual event, too." The 72-year old former base- ball writer says he's "not criti- cal" of Aaron's decision. "We're very pleased Hank would get something out of this. That's his choice. It's all com- pletely amicable." Smith said Aaron called him within 24 hours "to clear it up" that the Hall would get Aaron's historic artifacts after his five- year contract with Magnavox expired. The bats Aaron used to hit his 500th and 600th home runs, plus his 3,000th hit, already are in the Hall of Fame. But Mag- navox has loan rights to each hat and bal used from No. 700 through Aaron's last major league homer, a company spokesman said. Additionally, the company has the uniform, gloves and spikes used by Aaron when he hit Nos. 714, 715 and 716. "We are developing a plan to have them available for the public Shero eyes Saints' offer TORONTO (A) - Coach Fred Shero of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League is considering a $100,000-a-year offer from the Minnesota Fight- ing Saints of the World Hockey Association, the Toronto Star said Tuesday. Shero, who led the Flyers to an NHL Stanley Cup champion- ship victory this year, is quoted in the report from Philadelphia as saying that if he makes the switch, he will do so in the next few weeks and would become coach, general manager and part owner of the Saints.
