Things never get monoto- nous down there - we get lots of family fights and B and E's (breaking and entering)". Although Gilbreath and Ste- wart are rapidly destroying many of the erroneous notions attributed to the "weaker sex," they do not view themselves as the Florence Nightengales or Amelia Earharts of their pro- fession - nor do they claim to be crusaders in the women's liberation movement. About Behaftviorism B.F. SKINNER "ABOUT BEHAVIORISM is an unusually campact sum- mary of both the history and the philosoohv of the science of human behavior." -N.Y. "I'm not as much a liberated woman as most people would believe," says Gilbreath. "I be- lieve that women should be giv- en as much opportunity for pro- motion in police work, but I wouldn't accept a command position right now. Just three year'snago, this was completely a man's world." STEWART, who vehemently disagrees with a recent court ruling requiring the Detroit po- lice department to hire one wo- man for every man, believes that promotion and hiring poli- cies should take into account only the qualifications of the of- ficer. Although the policewomen take "a little kidding" from the men in the department, they voice no serious complaints. "Contrary to what a lot of people say, we have a great bunch of guys down here," as- serts Stewart. WHAT FEW grievances there are among the officers appear to emanate solely from the men. "My main complaint about the women is that I have to ride with them," says Officer Steve Prussian. "Any time the situation calls for brute force, I feel much less comfortable with a woman." Although he believes that there are some situations a fe- male officer can handle better than a male, Prussian claims that "when the situation de- mands an authority figure, it's much better to send in a man. "I'm just not as comfortable working with the women," he continues. "I like to go home alive at night." BOTH KRASNY and Zeck, however, proudly tout the com- petence of the policewomen. "Our female officers have proven they can be as effective as the men," says Krasny. "Al- though you have to consider the sort of community they'll be dealing with, what it all boils down to is the right kind of training." Prussian contends, however, that one of themain reasons the policewomen have been a success is because Ann Arbor is a community with a relatively low incidence of violent crime. Gilbreath and Stewart are rarely required to use their guns and they have never fired them in the line of duty. "The only time I've ever shot my gun was to kill an old pos- sum in my backyard," Gilbreath says with an amused smile. PROTEIN ON TAP MAMARONECK, N.Y. (-) - Drinking a glass of water may not be as satisfying as eat- ing a steak, but it may, some- day soon, become a lot more nutritious, according to scien- tists at the Novo Enzyme Corp. here. Scientists working or new ways to improve the wari's food supply have discovered that after treatment by a spe- cial enzyme, protein from such vegetables as soybeans, alfalfa and cotton seed becomes so- luble in almost any consumabte liquid. Vegetable protein could therefore, be added to ,lain tap water, making it a, even rich- er source of prot in than milk.
