Busby fires no-hitter By The Associated Press MILWAUKEE-Kansas City's Steve Busby fired the first no- hitter of the 1974 baseball sea- son last night, hurling a near- perfect, 2-0 beauty over the Milwaukee Brewers with the help of two sparkling catches by right-fielder Al Cowens. It was the second no-hitter of Busby's short career. As a rookie with the Royals last sea- son, the right-hander fired a no- hitter against the Detroit Tigers on April 27, 1973. BUSBY FACED 28 batters- only one over the minimum- giving up a walk to George Scott leading off the second in- ning. He had thrown two strikes to Scott before walking the Brewers' first baseman on four straight pitches. , Cowens twice went to the warning track in the outfield to flag down drives by Milwaukee hitters and preserve the pitch- ing classic. With one out in the second, Darrell Porter hit a long drive to right center which Cowens snared on the run. Then with two out in the fourth, Cowens raced into the same territory to haul in a drive by Scott. THERE WERE several other near-hits off the hard-throwing Busby, although not as dra- matic. With two down in the first, Busby knocked down a line drive by Dave May and threw him out. With two out in the third, Don Money hit a hard one-hopper at the pitcher and Busby nailed the batter. In the sixth, Robin Yount hit a line drive info the hole at shortstop, but Fred Patek took two steps to his left and caught it. Scott missed a base hit in the seventh when his check- swing line drive fell foul, inches outside first base. Tigers roar ARLINGTON - Ed Brinkman knocked in the tie-breaking run with an 11th-inning double, trig- gering the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Texas Rangers last night. Mickey Stanley drew a one- out walk and moved to third on a single by Jerry Moses. Brink- man doubled home Stanley to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead, Then John Knox grounded out, allowing Moses to score from third with an insurance run. Cubs zipped CHICAGO - Bobby Tolan scored an unearned run in the first inning and rookie Dan Spillner made it stand up with a one-hitter as the San Diego Padres scored a 1-0 victory and a three-game sweep of the Chi- cano Cabs yesterday. Tolan opened the game with a bunt single off Jim Todd, making his first major league start, and was sacrificed to sec- ond by Dave Roberts. He went to third when right fielder Jose Cardenal was slow throwing in Dave Winfield's fly out, and raced home when shortstop Don Kessinger's relay went high over third base for an error. Chicago's hit was Rick Mon- day's smash in the third which brushed Spillner's glove then was bobbled by second baseman Derrel Thomas. Mets mashed NEW YORK - Dusty Baker and Dave Johnson drove in fifth inning runs and Tom House turned in a clutch relief per- formance yesterday to lead the red-hot Atlanta Braves to a 5-0 victory over the reeling New York Mets. - Mai~'r eorvueStandings AMERICAN LEAGUE NATIONAL LEAGUE East W L Pet.
