Page Two THE MICHIGAN DAILY In the news International OTTAWA - The United States and France settled their long-standing and potentially shat- tering dispute yesterday over the nature of consultations within the North Atlantic Trea- ty organization. The final understanding clear- ed the way for formal release tnday of a de- claration of principles outlining a new relation- ship for the Western military alliance. The ministers concurred that the declaration will not contain a legal requirement that the Unit- ed States consult with fellow NATO members on such things as its negotiations with the Soviet Union. Instead, the declaration will do more than express a political commitment for each of the 15 NATO members to consult among themselves. National WASHINGTON - After a 24-hour delay, the Senate confirmed John Sawhill as the govern- ment's new energy chief. The vote was 87 to 4. The action came after Sen. James Abourezk, D-S.D., called for rejection of the nomination as "a clear signal to the administration that the Congress is fed up with fuel pricing policies that fleece the public for the benefit of the major oil companies." State LANSING - A suburban Detroit physician convicted of negligent homicide in the abortion death of an Ypsilanti woman was ordered yes- this morning terday to stop practiicng medicine until a formal hearing is held on whether to revoke or suspend his license. The MMPB ordered Ketchum, now practicing in Huntington Woods under an assumed name, to appear before the July 11 hearing to decide whether to suspend or revoke his license, place him on probation or merely reprimand him.
