SCORELESS TIE IN SOCCER CUP Hot words halt NFL discussions By The Associated Press NEW YORK - Talks between the National Football League Players Association and the league's Management Council broke off today with the play- ers denying a management claim that they had walked out on the negotiations. At issue are practices such as the so-called "Rozelle Rule" which permits the commission- er to set compensation for clubs losing players who play out their contracts and move on to other teams. "NOBODY walked out, cer- tainly not the players," said Bill Curry of the Houston Oilers, president of the Players Asso- ciation. "Today's session was ended at the suggestion of the mediator, Jim Scearce. We did not walk out." The Players Association said it was not prepared to resume negotiations until" the Manage- ment Council makes meaningful responses to its demands in this area. New York Giants' owner Wellington Mara issued a state- ment on behalf of the Manage- ment Council.
