In the capital, students held un- authorized meetings at Madrid University to discuss the April 25 coup which ended 42 years of dictatorship in neighboring Portugal and to protest a new student selection plan seen as a device to keep leftists out of Spain's crowded colleges. Students were heard shouting "Long live Portugal's revolt!" Police reinforcements moved onto the campus and routed thousands of students. Witnesses reported an unspe- cified number of "arrests and said a patrol car was stoned. REYKJAVIK -- Iceland's Prime Minister Olafur Johannesson resigned yesterday, forced out by strikes, inflation and a controversy over a U. S. military base. He set new elections for June 30. The resignation last week of a key cabinet member, Bjoern Jonsson, a union leader as well as the minister for communica- tions and social affairs, cost Johannesson's co- alition government its majority in the 60-mem- ber Althing (Parliament). National WASItNGTON-Rep. John Anderson, chair- man of the House Republican Conference, said the country would benefit if President Nixon this morning resigned and predicted his impeachment if he does not step aside voluntarily. Anderson (R- Ill.), gave his views to reporters shortly after House GOP leader John Rhodes of Arizona said Nixon "ought to consider resignation as a pos- sible option" if erosion of public confidence bars him from effectively carrying out his duties. CHICAGO () - Vice President Gerald Ford said yesterday that Watergate has caused a loss of confidence in the federal government "which has reached crisis proportions." He said, "The time has come for persons in po- litical life to face the truth and speak the truth." Discussing President Nixon's release of edited transcripts of White House conversa- tions, Ford said: "I believe those documents,. painful as they may be, will help establish the truth." Ford's schedule included four speeches in Chicago and downstate Illinois. He was interrupted frequently by cheers and applause from a generally friendly crowd dur- ing a stop at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Wveatiher Well it's at least Friday.
