A, 7, 9 This 1971 film from Joseph losey isn't a bad flick once di- rector Joseph Losey gets past some first reel jitters. In fact, if only the original L. P. Hart- ley novel had been better, this could have been one hell of a motion picture. HaroldtPinter did an admir- able if stilted job with the screenplay, given the hollow- ness of the Hartley book. Lo- sey's direction, basically, is nothing short of impeccable. All, however, seems strangely in vain. Frankly,this almost trite story of a rich socialite (played well by Julie Christie) who takes advantage of the ado- leicent crush of a 13-year-old boy (Dominic Guard, who will impress you) to carry on an af- fair with a poor farmer (de- pendable Alan Bates) just strikes me as a waste of time and superb talent. -David Blomquist Harold and Maude New World Film Co-op MLB Aud. 3, 7:30 There's nothing like a good, weird film to brighten up the day, and Hrold and Maude is iist that.
