Page Twelve THE MICHIGAN DAILY Tuesday, June 11, 1974 Rangers humble Tigers, 6-3 By JOHN KAHLER Special To The Daily DETROIT - Last night's Detroit Tiger-Texas Ranger game was similar to many of past years. Billy Martin was sitting in the dugout, cajoling, s c h e m i n e, and watching his team slaught- er an overmatched f o e. Only this time Martin was wearing a T e x a s Ranger uniform. Brash Billy returned to the sight of many past escapades last night, and his Rangers came away with a 6-3 victory over his former team. The Rangers raked Joe Coleman and Luke Walker for 17 hits, to hand the victory to Jackie Brown, now 5-2. COLEMAN, who hs lost his last six decisions and is 6-7 on the year, started serving up batting practice in the first in- ning after two were retired, Alex Johnson had a single turn- ed into a double by Jim North- rup's outfield misfort-tes, and Jeff Burroughs walked. Mike Hargrove then iashed a double that scored Johnson, Burroughs stopping at third. Jim Spencer followed with a single to drive home the two base- runners, but got himelf caught in a rundown attemnting to stretch the hit into a double. Toby Harrah led off the fourth with a single and, as is the cs- tom with those who nlay the Tigers, stole second. lke Sims, a former Tiger Stadium favo- rite, belted a long drive that curved foul. AichigAan Daily Sports not take the warning, since two pitches later Sims hit a long drive that did not curve foul, and Texas led, 5-0. Texas added their final run off Luke Walker in the seventh on consecutive singles by Har- grove, Spencer, and Harrah. Brown, who had blanked the Tigers on two hits through the first five innings, never pos- sessed good control and began to late in the game. Gates Brown singled ,and pinch run- ner John Knox was forced by Aurelio Rodriguez. Pinch hit- ter Norm Cash came out of the doghouse to triple Rodriguez home, and came home himself on a single by Gary Sutherland. The Tigers added an unearned run in the ninth as Rodriguez scurried home after Lenny Ran- dIe booted a grounder by Suth- erland. By then, Steve-Foucault had come on in relief of Brown. Martin was given a loud chor- us of cheers when he came out to present the lineup before the game. It was a nice sound, but he enjoyed the sound of seven- teen hits more. BoSx bounce By The Associated Press BOSTON - Dwight Evans hoisted a Vida Blue fastball down the right field line for a three-run homer and Luis Tiant continued his outstanding pitch- ing Monday night, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Oakland A's 4-1 in a duel of American League divi- sion leaders. Evans, a big right - handed slugger, capped a decisive four- run fifth inning against Blue with his fifth homer which cur- led just inside the foul pole in the nationally televised game. That was all Tiant needed in going the distance for the eighth consecutive time and boosting his record to 8-5 after a slow start. The veteran right-hander, winning his sixth game in a row, scattered six hits, struck out six and walked two. Angels offed NEW YORK - Lou Piniella produced the winning run with a double in the eighth inning, leading the New York Yankees to a 7-5 victory over the Cali- fornia Angels last night. Elliot Maddox drew a one-out walk off reliever Skip Lock- wood and came in with the tie- breaking run on Piniella's two- run hit into the left-field cor- ner. The Yankees added their seventh run on Bobby Murcer's single. A sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Winston Llenas in the seventh inning tied the game at 5-5 for California. Birds belted BLOOMINGTON - Bobby Darwin's two-run triple high- lighted a five-run seventh inn- ing, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 9-1 rout of the Bal- timore Orioles last night. Tony Oliva lined a two-run single before Darwin's triple and Eric Soderholm drove in the fifth run of the inning with a single. Soderholm singled in Min- nesota's first two runs in the first inning and the Twins took a 3-0 lead in the fourth off Dave McNally, 4-5, when Rod Carew singled home Glenn Borgmann.
