OVER 700 peacocks of Mid- dle American gathered in De- witt Saturday night to help celebrate the third annual Strawberry Festival, sponsored by the Dewitt Merry Mixers. The Dewitt celebration is a sep- arate event from the National Strawberry Festival held an- nually in Manistee during the first week of July. The festival featured four hours of square and round danc- ing, all the strawberry short- cake you could eat and lots of plain good fun. The dancing couples on the floor weren't of the ordinary "Turkey in the Straw" variety. They had to attend 20 lessons and memorize 75 basic move- ments before they could swing on the main floor. ALL THE dancers are mem- bers of square dancing clubs throughout Michigan - with such names as "Kuntry Kuz- ens," "Dudesand Dolls" and "Ringo Swingos" A couple from Adrian, Mar- vin and Marie Johnson said they started lessons after Ma- rie read an article in the news- paper. "We just wanted to get out," Marvin said. "We used to go to regular (barn) square dancing, but people there weren't as sociable. These peo- ple (the Maple City Swingers) are more friendly." Don Locke, the former presi- dent of the Twilighters from Grand Ledge, sees a great ad- vantage in learning Western square dancing. "There are clubs all over the United States and Germany," he explained. "There was a caller stationed over in Germany and he got five clubs going over there - calling them all in English too. My wife and I never go camp- ing without our dancing clothes. It's something a man and his wife can do together."
