But often the gruelling 1% miles of the final race of the Triple Crown is barely enough distance to determine a winner. The margin of victory in 10 of the last 25 Belmonts was one length or less. Eleven 3-year-olds were entered for today's 106th running of the $125,000 Belmont. Among those scheduled to go to the post at 5:40 p.m., EDT, were Kentucky Derby winner Cannonade and Preakness winner Little Current. The narrowest victory margin in the 10 closest Belmonts in the last quarter-century was the nose triumph by Jaipur in 1962. t nips By The Associated Press DETROIT-Jim Northrup provided the winning run with a bases-loaded single in the ninth, giving the De- troit Tigers a 5-4 victory over the California Angels last night.
