Oakland smashes Tigers, 9-I
f Tenace's grand slam
Shelps Blue win fifth

DETROIT - G e n e Tenace
blasted a 415-foot grand slam
home run in the fifth inning,
leading the Oakland A's to a 9-1
rout of the Detroit Tigers last
night.
Vida Blue, 5-5, scattered four
hits in seven innings for his
fourth consecutive victory and
fifth in his last six decisions.
Rollie F i n g e r s and Darold
Knowles pitched the last two
innings for the A's.
Tenace's homer,' his seventh
of the baseball season and third
career grand slam, came off
rookie Dave Lemanczyk and
landed in the lower centerfield
bleachers. It followed a walk to
Sal Bando, a single by Joe Rudi
and an intentional pass to Deron
Johnson.
Bando doubled home two runs
off Joe Coleman, 6-6, in the
third. Dick Green and Bill North
singled home two more A's who
walked off Coleman in the
fourth.
Johnson added a homer in the
seventh, while Detroit's run
came on a Willie Horton homer
in the fourth.
Birds squeeze by
BALTIMORE - Mark Belan-
ger's bloop double with two ont
in the ninth inning scored Frank
Baker from first base, mapsing
a three-run rally that lifted the
Baltimore Orioles to a 5-4 vic-
tory over the Kansas City Ro-
yals last night.
Bruce Dal Canton checked the
Orioles on five hits over the
first eight innings but walked
Tommy Davis to start the ninth.
Boog Powell grounded into a
forceout but Don Baylor also
walked.
Doug Bird relieved Dal Can-
ton and was greeted by Brooks
Robinson's run-scoring single,
his third hit of the game. Pinch
hitter Ellie Hendricks delivered
the tying run with a sacrifice
fly and Belanger's looper then
fell in short center field be-
tween Amos Otis and shorts!:p
Fred Patek.
Jim Wohlford h e l p e d the
Royals to their 4-2 lead with his
first home run of the saean in

the seventh inning off Dave
McNally. Wohlford also singled
and scored in the opening in-
ning on a handle hit by Hal
McRae.
George Brett singled home a
run in the fourth, took second
on the throw to the plate and
scored on a single by Al Cowens
for a 3-0 Kansas City lead.
The Orioles scored on a bases-
loaded forceout in the third and
pulled to within 3-2 on Robin-
son's RBI single in the fourth.
Indians riot
CLEVELAND - The Cleve-
land Indians scored seven runs
in the sixth inning, six on three-
run homers 'by Oscar Gamble
and Dave Duncan, and went on
to beat the Texas Rangers 9-3
last night.
A crowd of 8,101 maintained
its composure, in sharp con-
trast to the debris-throwing, un-
ruly fans who caused the In-
dians to forfeit Tuesday night's
game to the Rangers.
The Indians collected all their
runs in the first seven innings
with the help of homers. Char-
lie Spikes and George Hendrick
hit solo shots in the second inn-
ing, and Frank Duffy hit a
bases-empty blast in the wild
seventh to give Cleveland its
final margin.
Cards romp
SAN FRANCISCO - Lou
Brock and Tom Heintzelman
cracked three hits each yester-
day and Brock stole his 33rd
and 34th bases of the baseball
season, leading the St. Louis
Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over
the San Francisco Giants.
Right - hander Sonny Siebert,
6-3, gained the victory with last
out relief help from Orlando
Pena. Siebert was deprived of a
third consecutive shutout when
the Giants scored an unearned
run on right fielder Reggie
Smith's sixth - inning throwing
error. Smith, however, drove
home Brock twice and took the
National League RBI lead with
