Tuesday, June 4, 1974 I Sports of The Daily I Dirty tricks department BOSTON - A couple of years ago the Boston Red Sox lost the American League East championship by one-half game, playing one game less than the Detroit Tigers in a strike-delayed season. Now the Red Sox could be victimized again -- all because of flagrant violation of the major league rules. The infraction was overlooked by everybody, including the umpires, in a 13-inning, 5- 4 loss to the Minnesota Twins Wednesday night. With runners on first and third and one out in the 13th, light-hitting Jerry Terrell of the Twins stepped ito the batter's box. Boston veteran Diego Segui was set to pitch toeing the mound. Suddenly, Terrell moved around in the box. He scooped up a handful of dirt without leaving the designated area. Segui caught off guard, broke his hands from a set position before taking his foot off the rubber. The result: a balk brintging home the winning run. It was a bush trick, which Terrell later admitted he first pull- ed off years ago as a high school player in Minnesota. However, it worked - because neither the Red Sox nor the umpires knew the rule book. The rule book comes across hard and strong. On page 29, un- der rule 4.06 a, Item 3, it states no manager, player substitute coach, trainer or batboy shall at any time: "call 'time' or employ any other word or phrase or commit any act while the ball is alive and in play for the obvious purpose of trying to make the pitcher commit a balk." Burak named MVP The usual torrent of information came pouring forth from the Michigan Sports Information Department yesterday. It seems that Chris Burak was named the Most Valuable Player on the Michigan baseball team for its recently completed season. In addition, running back Joe Holland of Yonkers, N.Y. will attend Michigan in the fall. Holland's father is President of the American Stock Exchange and a member of the Board of Directors of General Motors. Young Joe ran for 1600 yards last fall. Diamond dust Oakland's Reggie Jackson and Minnesota's Rod Carew are waging a sensational battle for the A.L. batting lead. Carew, a .350 hitter last year is pounding out the hits at a .410 pace and Jackson is close behind at .399. Jackson also leads in home runs with 15 and is second to Jeff Burroughs in RBIs with 42. It's small wonder the Dodgers are sitting so pretty right now with a 37-15 record. Just take a . P E look at the N.L. RBI leaters. Steve Garvey leads the senior CINEMA circuit with 46 and tiammate Jim Wynn and Reggie Smithof . DOUBLE the Cardinals are next with 44 CURIOUS apiece. Then comes another TE AG Dodger, Ron Cey, with 42. * * * Q013 t c AiA aRGGIE ACKSOuN hita couple of homers against the Brewers Sunday, his 14th and 15th of the year.
