HE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven S HEAD COACH ONLY: Blazers sign Wilkens Wilkens' 14 years in the NBA included three years as player- coach in Seattle. Asked if it was a struggle to give up play- ing, he said: "I -had to ser- iously consider it. I love play- ing basketball. But the only way to take the job was to quit playing." When Walton, who has the reputation of being uninterested in wealth despite his multi-mil- lion dollar contract, signed with Portland, he celebrated by buy- ing a new shirt. "Bill bought a shirt; I'm go- ing to buy a tie," joked Wilkens at a news conference called to announce his appointment. A reporter asked Herman Sarkowsky, team president, if there were anything left in the team checking account after signing Walton and Wilkens. "Not a heck of a lot,' Sar- kowsky grinned. Walton's presence undoubted- ly will create additional pres- sure on Wilkens to produce a winning team. Wilkens, 36, played for Provi- dence College, then joined St. Louis of the NBA, going to Se- attle when the Hawks moved to Atlanta. He coached and play- ed in Seattle for three seasons, almost making the playoffs one year. Wilkens later was traded to Cleveland. for an estimated $2.5 million earlier this month. THE JEWISH GRAD GROUP Walton has been hailed as a 11UM r RE TH R player who could turn a fran- chise around, as Kareem Ab- FOOD-VOLLEYBALL-SURPRISES dul - Jabbar did in Milwaukee.
