Wanty said the kiosks sr-re the brainchild of two of his co- workers, Richard Turned and Mike McGuinness. Wanty claims that his job as landscape architect at the University has been 'one of the blessings of my life.' 'I liked to see things grow and 1 liked the creative part of design,' he says. 'it has been a real education working with the academic community as well as the de- sign professionals. WANTY'S JOB is divided into two parts: landscape des:gn and maintenance. Maintenance, he says, goes "all the way from big refuse trucks to men walk- ing around with nails on toe end of sticks." Mowing lawns and turning STEVE'S LUNCH 1313 SO. "We have had quite a few bad areas this year so it will be a real challenge," he remarks. ONE AREA of concern to Wanty is grass that is trodden into paths. "We encourage peo- ple to use the grass," lie sys. "The only time it becomes a problem is when people con- centrate the traffic." Wanty can't criticize students who walk on the grass, though, since, "Af- ter all, I enjoy it out there too." He says that when he reno- vates an area "the people on campusddo respect it,' but hais- lily adds, "in the majority of cases." Wanty is also trying to find an efficient and safe way to park bicycles. Aided by a com- puter study done by the local environmentalist group ENACT, Wanty found answers to such questions as where the bikes are from, where they are park- ed on campus, where they are parked at night, and what kind of security measures people tend to use. WANTY SAYS a major prob. lem is security. "It used to be that bikes were the $40 balloon tire types, but now with these 100 to $200 bikes, people want to keep their bikes right with them." He says that there are "al11 ideas." He collboraes w it h other divisions of the University such as the botany department or the School of Public health as well as calling for profes- sional expertise outside t h e University. ONCE HE HAS identified a problem, Wanty says he devel- ops as many alternative solu- tions as possible. He says he tries to have as many facts available as possible. "Ideals start to become obvious at that point," he says. One recent problem Wanty faced involved developitng a building entrance 26 feet below street level for the Fursten- burg Center, part of te Univer- sity's medical complex. Wanty had to consider what a person sees as he moves out of the building as well as the functional aspects of an en- trance. ONCE DESIGN is developed, be it for a building or for the grounds, it comes ander scrut- iny from the University plan- aers Office, the University Ar- chitects Office, and outside con- sultants. Says Wanty, "This fine work- ing relationship ntroduces a system of checks ond balances in terms of considering all as- pects of a project." Wanty claims that his job as landscape architect a, the Uni- versity has been "one at the blessings of my life. It seems to be the fact that Wanty and his colleagues care, however, that makes the cam- pus a place to look at and enjoy. FOREST FIRES BURN MORE- THAN TREES S FAST AND FRIENDLY SERVICE BY MR.
