From Wire Serri-e Reports 99th Preakness today BALTIMORE - Cannonade, the winner of the 100th Kentucky Derby is a 9-S favorite to capture the 99th running of the Preak- ness here at Pimblico this afternoon. Next best bets in the 1 3/16 mile second leg of the Triple Crown are Derby runnerup Hudson County at 9-2 and J.R.'s Pet, 6-1. The Preakness field of thirteen horses will be vying for a record total purse of $209,000 with an- other record $156,000 going to the winner. An estimated crowd of over 65,000 is expected for the 5:40 p.m. post time with national television coverage over CBS begin- ning at 5 p.m. The record time for the Preakness, 1:54, was set in 1971 by Canonero II. Bruins-Flyers sixth Sunday PHILADPILPHIA - The Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers are set to resume their best of seven Stanley Cup final series Sunday (2 p.m. national TV) at the Spectrum with the Flyers holding a three games to two advantage. The Bruins S-1 brawlish victory on home ice Thursday night has restored their confidence although they realize they must win Sunday in order to force a seventh and deciding game in Bos- ton Tuesday night. "We had our backs to the wall and had to win this one," claimed Boston coach Bep Guidolin, "Now their backs are to the wall. We're due for a good game in Philadelphia and if we have it Sunday it will be all over for them." I MADISON -- The Maize and Blue tennis squad appears well on its way to a seventh consecutive Big Ten tennis championship. Michigan netters won all six of their singles matches, paced by Victor Amaya at number one, and all three of their doubles matches. Eight of the nine victories were taken in straight sets. Michigan's 107 point total gives it a wide margin over second place Itqdiana with 76 at the end of the quarterfinals. The semi-finals will be played tomorrow with the finals on Sunday. Golfers's seventh IOWA CITY-Michigan's golfers placed a dismal seventh at the end of the first 36 holes of action in the 72-hole Big Ten Championship. Despite the miserable team performance, Wolverine John Dale found himself tied for second in individual medalist competition with Indiana's Kelly Roberts. Hoosier Bob Jackson posted the best 36 hole score, 143, followed closely by Dale and Roberts at 144. The Hoosiers appear destined to defend their title as they hold a commanding 18 stroke lead over nearest rival Ohio State. Baseball cancelled The scheduled doubleheader between Michi- gan and Northwestern was cancelled due to rain in Evanston yesterday. The rainout dash- ed any hopes Moby Benedict's crew had of the Big Ten baseball championship. The diamondmen will travel to Madison to- morrow for a season ending doubleheader with the Wisconsin Badgers. Welu dies. IOUSTON One of pro bowling's all time greats, Bil- ly Welu, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home here. Welu won numerous top tour- naments including the Ameri- can Bowling Congress Masters which he won twice while set- ting numerous records for the event. Welu served as presi- dent of the Professional Bowl- ers Association for two years and held a master's degree in education from St. Louis Uni- versity.
