(Continued from Page 3) Those who have not been able to improve io spite of extra help will be "helped toward an area of vocational training rather than academic training," so they will leave school with a marketable skill. WARNER SEES his plan as an. alternative to the present situa- tion where a student is repeatedly suspended until he gets tired of it and quits. Without .a diploma or a skill, the dropout may end op on welfare or in prison, ac- cording to Warner. "Let's try to help these kids so we don't have to continue to pay the price for the next 60 years," he says. The plan has been received with skepticism and outright con- demnation from more liberal ele- ments of the community. Wendy Wilson, student representative on the school board called it "a lousy idea" which is "not going to help anything." Larry Stewart, president of the Teachers Association, feels the plan "doesn't make much sense" considering recent school board action cutting allocations for counsellors, socialworkers and special education teachers. Taken as a whole, school board actions seem to reflect "a shift from prevention to punishment of offenders," according to Larry Stewart. AT THIS TIME, a "wait and see" attitude seems to prevail- at least until the detailed plan is ready on July 1. 603 east liberty MIC HIG A N Theatre Phone .,-69 SHOWS DAILY at 1:00-3:30-6:15-8:45 THE"FOR FUN" 7 TV Listings )Contitnoed-tfromP age 2) "Mighty Joe Young" (1949) 7 24 Odd Couple 9 Woods and Wheels 20 Seven Hundred Club 56 Conversation with Sol Hurok 10:00 4 13 Bold Ones 7 24 Love, American style 9 Tommy Hunter 50 Perry Mason 56 The Toy That Grew Up "Young Aprit" (1915-Silent) t1;00 2 4 7 t1 13 24 Newss 9 CBC News-Lloyd Robertson One Step Beyond 11:30 2 Movie "The Neon Ceiling."
