The Tigers had tied the score in the bottom of the eighth on hits by Willie Horton and Bill Freelhan and an infield out be- fore Sharp hit his third homer of the baseball season. Chicago went ahead in the top half of the eighth when Jorge Orta tripled and trotted home on rookie Jerry Hairston's dou- ble. Chicago catcher Ed Herrmann helped Detroit to unearned runs in the first and fifth innings. Tony Taylor singled for the Tigers in the first, took second on Herr- mann's passed ball and third when he threw wild to second on the advance, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Al Kaline. In the fifth, Aurelio Rodriguez singled, reached second on an- other Herrmann passed ball and scored on a single by Mickey Stanley. Birds fly BLOOMINGTON, Minn-Mike C u e 11 a r frustrated Minnesota with his off-speed pitches and Tom with his off - speed pitches and Tommy Davis hit a first - inning home run, carrying the Balti- more Orioles to a 2-1 victory over --'the Twins last night. The victory moved Baltimore into first place in the American League's East Division, one-half game ahead of Detroit, which lost to Chicago, and a full game ahead of idle New York. Cuellar, who had lost three of his four other starts since base- ball's All-Star break, struck out nine Twins danscattered six hits to improve his record to 9-12. Davis, Baltimore's designated hitter, lofted a two-out, bases- empty homer in the first off loser Bert Blyleven, 14-11, to give Cu- ellar the only run he needed. Royals romp KANSAS CITY - Hal McRae drove in two runs with a homer s and triple and Doug Bird provid- ed clutch relief pitching in the eighth inning, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox last night. McRae tripled home a run and scored on Rick Reichardt's sacri- fice yy in the second inning to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. Then he led off the fourth with a home run, his fourth of the year, to provide starter Steve Busby, 10-11, with the winning run. MILWAUKEE - Dave May's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-5 baseball victory over the California Angels yester- day. With the Brewers trailing 5-4 and one out in the ninth, May slammed his 18th home run of the season into the right field seats off reliever Rudy May, 7-11, scor- ing Bob Coluccio ahead of him. John Briggs tied the score in the fifth with a two-run homer, his 13th, but Mike Epstein put the Angels ahead with a three- run shot in the sixth off Jim Sla- ton, 7-10, after singles by Ken Berry and Bob Oliver. Braves rally ST. LOUIS - Dave Johnson capped a five-run rally in the eighth inning with a three-run homer, his 30th, powering the Atlanta Braves to an 8-6 triumph over the faltering St. Louis Car- dinals last night.
