The Oklahoma mess could have been avoided if the Sooners
had been able to recruit the man they really wanted to succeed
Jack Mildren as master of the Wishbone. Current Milwaukee
Brewer hitting sensation Darrell Porter was wooed by the Sooners
(whether within the regulations or not is uncertain) but chose
professional baseball instead. If he had gone with the Sooners,
they would have sat Kerry Jackson on the bench and the need
to tamper with his transcript might not have arisen.
Pirate power
As if the Pittsburgh organization was not overloaded with
hitters as is, the Pirates have found a new one down on their
Niagara Falls Class A team. Well known to Michigan fans, he is
former left fielder Tom Kettinger. Kettinger is currently batting
.333 (32 for 96) with 8 home runs and 22 runs batted in.
Gophers go NBA
Two Minnesota Gophers inked NBA contracts yesterday with
Ron Behagan going to the Kansas City-Omaha Kings and Clyde
Turner to the Milwaukee Bucks. Behagan and Turner both inked
two year pacts. Besides their skills, the two had other identifying
marks. Behagan was known for his involvement in the OSU-
Minnesota brawl and Turner was known for his rapidly receed-
ing hairline.
The Rocky road
NEW YORK-The Yankees announced yesterday that in,
order to make room for Wayne Granger, acquired from the
Cardinals, they had sent ex-Met Ron Swoboda down to their
Syracuse farm club. Swoboda, who was batting only .125 at the
time of his demotion, will be called up when the roster expands
to 40 men September first.
Blalock back.
NEW YORK - The Ladies Professional Golf Association's
appeal in its law suit with golfer Jane Blalock was disallowed
Monday, a lawyer for the golfer announced yesterday.
. Monday a circuit court of appeals at New Orleans refused
to entertain an appeal of an earlier district court ruling in
Miss Blalock's favor.
On May 31, 1972 Miss Blalock was suspended by the LPGA
for allegedly cheating by mismarking her ball on the putting
surface.
