Howe bolted Detroit and the NHL earlier this summer when he signed on with the Aeros of the World Hockey Association. Delvecchio announced his de- cision at a news conference I Sports of The Daily I I man tract which he said would pay "in six figures," and included fringe benefits, performance bo- nuses and a job in the, front of- fice when his playing days are over. Ralph the Cougar CHICAGO - The Chicago Cou- gars of the World HockeyAsso- ciation yesterday lured veteran center Ralph Backstrom away from the Chicago Black Hawks of the rival National Hockey League for an estimated $750,000. The 35-year-old Backstrom, a 16-season NHL player, was the second Black Hawk standout signed by the Cougars in two weeks. On July, defenseman Pat Stapleton was signed for an es- timated $1 million as Cougar player-coach. Another Black Hawk, star cen- ter Stan Mikita, is being wooed by the Cougars. Backstrom had a cereer NHL total of 278 regular season goals with the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings and Black Hawks, who got him from Los Angeles last Feb. 25. President Walter Kaiser of the Cougars said a settlement, not in- cluding players, had been made with the Los Angeles Sharks, who held the WHA's original negotia- tion rights to Backstrom. Last year Bradley played in all 82 regular season games and 17 playoff contests as the Knicks captured their second NBA title in four years. He was also named to the NBA All-Star team for the first time. Bradley scored a career-high 1,319 points last year, averag- ing 16.1 points per game in reg- ular season action and 18.6 in the playoffs. His free throw percent- age during the 1972-73 campaign was .871, erasing a Knick mark of .868 set by Kenny Sears in 1959-60.
