Page Twelve THE SUMMER DAILY Wednesday, August 1, 1973 Hiller saves another Yankee rally nips Bosox; Bengals rally past Brewers From Wire Service Reports MILWAUKEE - It wasn't easy for ace reliever John Hiller but the sensational Canadian hng on to record his 23rd save last night as the high-flying Detroit Tigers chalked up their sixth con- secutive win, the longest Bengal winning streak this season, by nipping Milwaukee 6-5 in the opener of a twi-night double- header. Despite giving up an eighth- inning homer to George "Boom- er" Scott plus a walk and a single by Scott in the ninth, Hiller bore down, retiring pinch hitter Ollie "Downtown" Brown on a grounder to Dick McAuliffe to give fireman Bob Miller his third win. Scott's single came follow- ing a free pass to Bob Coluccio and strike outs by Pedro Garcia and Dave May, the AL's hottest ,}itter with a 24-game hitting streak A pair of three-run rallies gave the Bengals the victory. In the seventh inning, singles by Gates Brown and Bill Freehan and a throwing error by Coluccio put the Tigers ahead to stay. A's trade The Oakland A's, fighting for the AL West lead, obtained a pair of veteran outfielders yesterday in cash deals. From Houston, the A's bought Jesus Alou and then purchased Vic Davalillo from Pittsburgh. Davalillo returns to the junior circuit and Alou joins his brothers, Matty and Felipe, both members of the New York Yankees. CARDS INCREASE LEAD Aaron belts number 701 By The Associated Press ATLANTA - Joe Morgan and Tony Perez b e l t e d two - run homers in Cincinnati's four-run seventh inning, giving the Reds a 9-5 triumph over the Atlanta Braves despite Henry Aaron's 701st career homer in the ninth in the opener of yesterday's twi- night doubleheader. Morgan connected for his 13th home run of the baseball cam- paign after a Pete Ruse single, snapping a 3-3 tie. Cardinals fly MONTREAL - Joe Torre and Ted Simmons slammed three-run homers, powering the St. Louis Cardinals to a 10-5 victory over the Montreal Expos last night. St. Louis jumped on Montreal starter Ernie McAnally, 7-6, in the first inning when Ted Size- more walked, Tim McCarver singled and Simmons hit his eighth homer of the baseball season. Montreal came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning on Jim Lyttle's triple but the Cards regained their three-run, lead in the third. Simmons led off with a double and Bernie Carbo followed with a walk. After Torre bounced into a fielder's choice, Jose Cruz scored Simmons with a sacrifice fly. Mike Tyson then singled and pitcher Alan Foster, 8-6, laced a run-scoring single. Pirates smokin' NEW YORK - Dock Ellis and Ramon Hernandez combined to pitc ha four-hitter and Richie Zisk set up a pair of runs with doubles, leading the red-hot Pitts- burgh Pirates to a 4-1 victory over the New York Mets last night. Ellis, 10-9, pitched six strong innings and allowed three of the Mets' hits before giving way to Hernandez, who preserved the Pirates' 10th victory in their last 13 baseball games. Ellis was re- moved because of a minor swell- ing of the left knee. The Pirates' winning run was scored with the help of a New York error in the fourth inning. Zisk doubled with two outs, then scored when first baseman Ed Kranepool allowed Bob Rob- ertson's grounder to go through him and into right field. Dodgers tripped HOtSTON-Veteran Dave Rob- erts gave up four Los Angeles hits in the first seven innings and then four singles in the eighth but the Housotn Astros held on for a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers last night. Singles by Bill Russell, Dave Lopes, Manny Mota and Willie Davis produced one Los Angeles run in the eighth, chasing Rob- erts in favor of Don Wilson, who induced Joe Ferguson to ground out to end the inning. The Dodgers' Dave Lopes homered for their first run off Roberts, 11-8, to even the game in the sixth. It was the fourth home run of the baseball cam- paign for Lopes. But Houston responded with two runs off loser Tommy John, 10-6, on a walk, Cesar Ce- deno's run-scoringa double and a sacrifice fly by Doug Rader.
