Page Twelve THE SUMMER DAILY Tuesday, July 31, 1973 Miller's single dooms Lyle, Yanks Benga s sweep O's, 4 -3 From Wire Service Reports Don't look now but the Ameri- can League East is as tangled as curly- hair after a shower. And with the two top clubs display- ing the classic inept form of chal- lengers in the division have shown of late, the horse race has just begun. And in the thick of all of it is the team that was six games out just one week ago at the All- Star break,-the tortoise-like De- troit Tigers. Last night they com- pleted an almost unbelievable three game sweep of the Balti- more Orioles. But despite their 4-3 loss, the Orioles dropped not a stitch in the standings, remaining one game behind tiring but still pace- setting New York Yankees. The Yanks, who had captured ten of fourteen recently, took a 4-3 dive in Boston as Rick Miller singled with two out off relief ace Spar- ky Lyle in the bottom of the ninth to give the Sox the game. The Tigers took to the war- path again last night and pound- Kenny Singleton, who had previously doubled in the only Expo run, is tagged out by New York Met backstop Russ Hodges. Expo pitcher rookie Steve Rogers pitched his second shutout in succession in the first game of last night's doubleheader. Cubs regain balance, nip Cards By The Associated Press C H I C A G O - Rick Reuschel allowed only five hits in out- dueling Bob Gibson yesterday and led the Chicago Cubs to a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The triumph, Chicago's second straight, gave the Cubs a split of their four game series with the Cards and put them within 1/a-games of St. Louis, leader in the National League East. "t. Louis scored its run in the first inning when Lou Brock walked, stole his 35th base of the season and the 600th of his career, and rode home on a single by Tim McCarver. Dick McAuliffe, hav- ing an excellent season at the second base slot, rapped one in the second, Duke Sims smacked his eighth of the campaign in the fourth, and Northrup followed with his shot one inning later. On the hill Lolich was supreme until the ninth. Brooks Robinson, badly fooled in earlier appear- ances, lined a double down the left field line. Lolich, however, slipped up on the next batter, the AL East Focus banjo - hitting backstop Andy Etchebarren. Andy, whose shots usually reside in baseball's play- ing arenas, caught a Lolich of- fering for his first round tripper of the year. MERV RETTEMUND drew a free pass and Tiger skipper Bill Martin called his favorite fire- man, John Hiller. Hiller walked Bobby Grich and looked in trou- ble with the dangerous Paul "Motormouth" Blair swinging his menacing club. Blair whipped out a loud foul to run the count to two balls and two strikes before the marvel- ous Hiller, certainly the Come- back Player of the Year, broke a curve that not only fell off the proverbial table, it fell off Mt. Everest Blair went after the pitch and missed. THE TIGERS MOVED closer to the summit when Miller came through in the clutch to salvage the game for the Bosox. The Yanks had knotted the score in the top of the frame. Gene Mi- chael singled and Jim art punched a pinchahome runoff starter Luis Tiant. Lyle, 4-6 but with 26 saves, re- placed starter Fred Beene in the final stanza, making a rare start was greeted by a Rico Petrocelli single. When Al uncorked a wild one, Rico went to second. Third he captured on Doug Griffin's in- field out. . Rangers' Bibby wins no-hitter BULLETIN OAKLAND W ) - Jim Bibby, acquired less than two months ago by Texas, fired the fourth no-hitter of the baseball season last night, pitching the Rangers to a 6-0 victory over the Oakland A's. Bahnsen, in running his record to 14-10, throttled the Twins on eight hits. The loser was Jim Kaat, 11-10, who was routed in the sixth as the White Sox com- bined triples by Jerry Hairston and Ken Henderson, Bill Mel- ton's single and reliever Ray Cor- bin's wild pitch into their four- run inning and a 6-0 lead. Chuck Brinkman's double, the White Sox' third and fourth triples by John Jeter and Tony Muser, and Pat Kelly's sacrifice fly delivered two more runs in the seventh. BUDDY BRADFORD'S seventh home run in the fifth put Chicago ahead 2-0. Chicago o p e n e d the scoring with an unearned run in the third inning. Jeter singled home Luis Alvarado, who had singled and gone all the way to third when Rod Carew dropped Katt's throw on Brinkman's sacrifice. Henderson hit his sixth homer in the eighth, while Tony Oliva's 10th home run in' the bottom of the f r a m e stopped Bahnsen's shutout bid. Expos find Rogers NEW YORK - Ken Singleton lined a ninth-inning run-scoring double that carried young Steve Rogers and the Montreal Expos to a 1-0 victory over the New York Mets yesterday in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader. Until Ron Hunt led off the' ninth with a single to center field, Jon Matlack, 7-14, had a one-hitter going - P e p e Frias' fifth-inning single. Ron Woods sacrificed Hunt to second, then Singleton lashed his decisive double to right-center field. Hal Breeden followed with a single to right but Rusty Staub nailed Singleton at the plate. Rogers, 2-0, whose first major league baseball victory was a one-hit shutout last Thursday over Philadelphia, checked the Mets on seven hits. He struck out three batters, walked three and was helped by three double plays. Skull and Bones down PITTSBURGH-Bob Boone sin- gled home the game's only run in the fourth inning and Steve Carlton made it stand up with a six-hitter, leading the Philadel- phia Phillies to a 1-0 decision over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. Boone's single, one of just five hits surrendered over seven in- nings by loser Bob Moose, 6-10, scored Greg Luzinski, who had singled and taken second on a walk to Del Unser, CARLTON struck out ten in boosting his record to 10-11 and issued only one walk and got a big break in the seventh inning. Vic Davalillo, who ran for Bob Robertson after he drew a walk, was at first base with two out when pinch hitter Dave Cash rapped a single off the glove of third saseman Mike Schmidt,
