Local businesses owe delinquent tax (continuedfrom Page 3) Hall said he had no ethical qualms about violating the tax laws because "this is business and in business you take the path if YOU see news happen call 76-DA ILY of least resistance and interest." Bentley commented that he had "mixed feelings" about raising penalty rates on delin. quent taxes, claiming it would hurt the small property owners "who genuinely can't afford to pay their taxes." HE DID, HOWEVER, admit in- creasing the penalties would fa- cilitate prompt collection from corporate interests. Often large businesses do not pay their property taxes until the three year deadline is reach- ed, according to Bentley. He cit- ed the Ramada Inn as such a business. The Ramada Inn manager ex- plained that the current taxes "might not have been paid" be- cause the Inn is presently sub- ject to bankruptcy proceedings filed in federal court, but he re- fused to comment further on the situation. CON S OLI DATED Operations Corp., a local realty operation, owes $24,000 in back taxes on three parcels of land. "We just bought the properties and there has been a time lag getting the finances caught up," company manager H. C. Garber said. The debt would be "taken care of shortly,",he added. Traver Lakes Inc. has not paid outstanding property taxes of about ,$16,000 because the com- pany has been in a state of reor- ganization, spokesman Peter Allen claimed. The corporation, operated by the Pittsburgh firm of Mathews- Phillips Inc., has been developing 320 acres in the city as apart- ments and condominiums. WHILE THE reorganization was taking place, no debts were paid, according to Allen. The alterations have been complet- ed and the accounts including taxes are now being settled, he said. Milgor Co. has delinquent taxes totaling $13,200 on approximately 30 parcels located in the Huron River Acres area. In addition to financing local schools, a smaller portion of the property taxes is funneled into the city's general fund and the remainder is given to the county. LAST YEAR the city assessed over $30 million in property tax- es. To date nearly all of that money has been collected, But Bentley noted that 10 per cent of the taxes generally have to be turned over to the county as de- linquent accounts. Until this year the city had to wait while the county collected the back taxes before receiving its share. The county, however, has instituted a new program through which the county bor- rows money at an interest rate less than the penalty fees, accord- ing to Bentley. Consequently the city receives tax money immediately from the county. The county then pays off the loan as it collects outstand- ing debts. Even though the sys- tem prevents the city from los- ing funds because of delinquent taxes, no satisfactory method compelling prompt payment has been developed. REFUSAL EXPECTED BigScot.
