THE STUDY GAME HOW TO PLAY AND WIN Available in Paperback at U CELLAR and FOLLETTS date, Citizen Kane is consideredr to be the American movie mas- terpiece. A brief description, for anyone who may not have seen it: The film is structured as a mystery. Charles Foster Kane, the reigning American newspa- per magnate, has just died. We see a rough version of a news- reel recounting various incidents in Kane's career. The newsreel producers aren't quite satisfied with their work, though. Kane's last word was "Rosebud": they would like to explain to the public the signifi- cance of this final utterance. A nondescript reporter sets about therefore, to interview people who knew Kane, people who might be able to solve the Rose- bud mystery. What is unravelled as the mo- vie progresses, 'however, is not a simple murder plot or minor in- trigue. Our insights into Kane's life offer nothing less than an epic overview of American his- tory, American notions of success, American lack of intimate per- sonal relationships. And all this presented in the most imagina- tive, Gothic, precise, and evo- cative style movies have ever seen. One of the two or three greatest films, clearly and unde- batably. GIMME SHELTER The Maysles Brothers happen- ed to be in the midst of shoot- ing a documentary about the Rolling Stones three years ago when the Altamount violence took place. Call is luck of a biz- arre sort: the infamous stabbing, captured on film, provided an ending and a thrust to a docu- mentary that would otherwise have, been aimless at best. The Maysles are to be both praised and blamed for doing relatively with their footage. The, actions and the people are allowed to speak for themselves, ofttimes eloquently. But what you'll' get out of the movie - apart from the undeniable voyeuristic fasci- nation - depends almost entire- ly upon the powers of cultural and social analysis you bring with you, and, more important- ly, upon your interest in the sub- ject matter. NOT SEEN BY PRESS TIME, BUT RECOMMENDED: I have- n't seen either of these two films yet, but their credits are attrac- tive, and by simple process of elimination (I have seen all the other films playing this week end), I would guess that these are two of the better films pres- ently on campus. GALLERY HOURS: Tuesday-Saturday 10-5, Closed Sun. and Mon. I'm delighted that at long last The Harrad Experiment is a movie. When I wrote Harrad in 1965-3 dedicated it to the men and women of the 21st cen- tury with the feeling that it would be at least fifty years before the kind of undergraduate colege where a male and female roomed together-were ac- tually pre-chosen for each other as one possible marital mate-would come into existence. I have the feeling that the Harrad Experiment, which after seven years continues to be widely read by the younger generation, has re-inforced the kind of living environment now avail- able on miost campuses. Hut keep in mend-there is still no Haccad College where a snob and fe- male can actually room together with- in the college grounds with administra- tion and faculty approval. Hoc is there any premarital structure whose avowed purpose is to create a learning environ- ment where young males and females can experience, intimately (over a per- iod of several years), more than one member of the other sex as a part of their total educational experience. I believe that within the next ten years Harrad will be a common experi- ence available to millions of young peo- ple. The Harrad Experiment, as a moving picture, will reach additional millions who will make a Harrad type under- graduate experience a reality in our lifetime. When it happens it will be a more joyous world to live Int MOST READ BOOKONACAMPUS IS NOW ON SCREEN!
