Tal Brody, former star for the University of Illinois, and Barry Leibowitz, formerly of Long Island University, scored six points, giving the Israelis an eight-point lead with two minutes to play. They thwarted an American rally that had reduced a 66-57 deficit to 76-74 with five minutes left. Despite the defeat, the United States won the most gold medals at the Games, 76 to Israel's 60. However, the Israelis edged the Americans in total medals 163- 162. The official count did not in- clue the delayed results in lawn bowling. Both basketball teams went into the championship game un- beaten and it appeared the Americans would win when they opened a 10-point lead with three minutes to play in the first half. The Israelis wiped out the defi- cit, scoring on long shots for a 44-43 halftime edge. Ernest Grunfeld of Forest Hills, N.Y., a former Michigan recruit,. with a game total of 27 points, led the American second-half rally that was cut short by Brody and Leibowitz. The Israelis capi- talized on three crucial turn- overs by the Americans in the last two minutes. Aaron Grandinson of Laurel- ton, N.Y., played five minutes SSports of The Daily for the Americans in the second half and became the first black to break the color barrier at the Games. He is the son of a rabbi. Paul Cohen of Bull, Mass., and Lawrence Wean of Ardmore, Pa., each scored 14 points for the Americans. Bob Fleischer of Youngstown, Ohio, added 13.
