Weiskopf, who played his last :r 4 e four holes in a cold rain, dem- onstrated the discipline and con- trolled power that has enabled him to dominate the American tour in recent weeks as he shot a 67 and established a three stroke lead. Yancey ran in a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole - it hung on the left lip for a tantalizing moment be- fore dropping in - for a second 69. While Weiskopf's lead was im- pressive, he wasn't yet counting this ancient title his. Not by any means. "I've got to continue to play good or these guys - if you've got gsuys like Miller and Jack Nicklaus and Yancey up there - they'll go right on by you." NICKLAUS, the pre-tourney fa- vorite to win his third British Open title and break Bobby Jones record of 13 major champion- ships, had an erratic 70 - five birdies and three bogeys - and was alone at 139 as the tour- toughened Americans continued to hold the first four places. 'I just didn't play very well," Nicklaus said. "I drove the ball very poorly, and when I did get it in the fairway I'd miss the green." THE KEY to Weiskopf's round yesterday was his dominance of the par 5 holes. He birdied three of those four, and got two of the birdies after hitting one iron sec- ond shots on the green then two- putting. The other, on the 577-yard 16th came after he wedged up to about eight feet and made the putt.. He also birdied the third hole from six feet and the seventh from 10pnd missed 15 footers six times, once for an eagle. Wieskopf, who credits a new- found maturity with his recently improved -play, missed only three greens but saved par on all of them. Twsce he chipped up close and ran in a 12 footer on the oth- er. THE YOUTHFUL Miller also got around without a bogey and played the tough back nine in three under par. "I feel like I'm in good shape," he said. "I'm very relaxed. I'm not out there going from shot-to- shot saying 'boy, I'm gonna win 'the tournament."' There's too many holes left for that." Yancey got his share of sec- ond by making birdies on two of his last three holes, punching a short iron to within six feet on the 16th then making the tough putt on the last hole. The cutoff figure to qualify for the final two rounds was 152. One of the victims was Masters Champion Tommy Aaron who had a 153. W L Pct.
