RECOMMENDED: Carnal Knowledge: Ours is a society as preoccupied with sex as it can possibly be: we make screwing a national pastime, sexual oneupsmansbip an indi- cator of individual worth, sexual role-playing a way of life. It's hard to believe sex once had somethoing to do with ex- pressing affection. Anywaymthis is analyzed acutely and metic- uloisly in Mike .Nichol's Carnal Knowledge. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls - Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert was an admirer of Russ Meyer's skin flicks back when pornography was neither chic nor fashionable; back when' stag house habitues all wore rain- coats, carried old hats, and tend- ed to occupy the front rows of the theatre. How just, then, that Fate rolled her dice four years ago and Ebert turned up screen- writer for a Meyer extravaganza: The product of this perfect col- laboration is Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, the simple tale of an all-girl rock band that travels to Hollywood to encounter fame, fortune, sex, "dolls," violence, biological freaks, crafty law- yers, and homicidal maniacs. It's all a truly hilarious put- on, a dead-pan parody of every sensational bit of commercial trash ever written or filmed about the West Coast and its wild ways. The movie was originally panned unmercifully by offended critics (hurting Ebert deeply but leaving Meyer undaunted); it seems now to be building the sort of campus cult following it clear- ly deserves. 6:00 2 4 7 11 13 News 9 Courtship at Eddie's Father Holiday - Carefree, individual- 20 Land o the Giants istic Johnny Case (Cary Grant) 24 ABC News-oSmith/Reasoner is engaged to wealthy, sophisti- 50 Flintstones catel, but relatively staid Julia 56 Erica Seton (Doris Nolan).
