Roger Ebert was an admirer of
Russ Meyer's skin flicks back
when pornography was neither
chic nor fashionable; back when'
stag house habitues all wore rain-
coats, carried old hats, and tend-
ed to occupy the front rows of
the theatre. How just, then, that
Fate rolled her dice four years
ago and Ebert turned up screen-
writer for a Meyer extravaganza:
The product of this perfect col-
laboration is Beyond the Valley
of the Dolls, the simple tale of
an all-girl rock band that travels
to Hollywood to encounter fame,
fortune, sex, "dolls," violence,
biological freaks, crafty law-
yers, and homicidal maniacs.
It's all a truly hilarious put-
on, a dead-pan parody of every
sensational bit of commercial
trash ever written or filmed
about the West Coast and its wild
ways. The movie was originally

panned unmercifully by offended
critics (hurting Ebert deeply but
leaving Meyer undaunted); it
seems now to be building the sort
of campus cult following it clear-
