Stones, 19, of Glendale, Calif., set the new mark on his third. and final try bettering the old standard by a quarter inch, for- merly held by Pat Matsdorf of Wisconsin. Fregosi came to the Big Apple in exchange for Nolan Ryan and needless to say California profitted slightly better . . . and outfielder Rick Reichardt was signed as a free agent by the Kansas City Royals yesterday. Reichardt was released last week by the White Sox in a dispute over unsigned contracts. Pigskin points The St. Louis footbll Cardinals yesterday traded veteran defensive back Dale Hackbart to the Denver Broncos for a future draft choice. By The Associated Press DETROIT-Jim Northrup slammed a pair of three-run homers and drove in eight runs and Willie Horton add- ed a three-run double, pac- ing the Detroit Tigers to a 14-2 drubbing of the Texas Rangers last night. It was the most runs the Tigers have scored in one game this baseball season. They sent 23 batters to the plate in the first three in- nings, jumping to a 7-0 lead with fosur runs in the second off Lloyd Allen, 0-4, and three in the third off reliev- er Jim Kremmel. Duke Sims added a two-run homer for the Tigers in the, sixth and Dick McAuliffe had a solo shot in the eighth. Jim Perry breezed to his ninth triumph against eight losses. Texas scored its two runs on a single by Rico Carty in the fifth. Chisox toppled CHICAGO-Fritz Peterson and Sparky Lyle combined to stop Chicago on four hits and pitch the New York Yankees back into first place in the American League East withta 2-1 victory over the White Sox yesterday. Ron Blomberg homered to Summer Daily lead off the second inning to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead against Steve Stone, 4-5. Hal Lan- ier doubled and Horace Clarke singled him home in the fourth for New York's other run. Peterson, who was aided by four double plays, broke a per- sonal four - game losing streak and raised his season's record to 7-10. It was the Yankee's first victory over the White Sox in eight meetings this season. Bosox cro -ped BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -Bert Blyleven scattered six hits and Tony Oliva smacked a two-run double, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 3-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox yesterday. Larry Hisle and Rod Carew led off the first inning with sin- gles off Boston starter John Cur- tis, 7-8. Bobby Darwin was cre- dited with a single when his grounder hit Hisle, with Hisle being called out on the play. Oliva then delivered his two- run double into left the field cor- ner. The Twins made it 3-0 in the fourth on singles by George Mit- terwald, Danny Walton and Jer- ry Terrell. Blyleven struck out five and walked one as Minnesota broke a three - game losing streak and Boston had a three-game win- ning skein snapped. Cubbies clubbed SAN FRANCISCO - Ed Good- son's second home run of the game, a two-run blast, highlight- ed a five-run seventh inning rally that lifted the San Francisco Giants to a 7-3 baseball tri- umph over the Chicago Cubs yes- terday. With the score tied 2-2 in the seventh, Dave Rader singled, Dave Kingman walked and both moved up on a wild pitch. Tito Fuentes drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly and Gar- ry Maddox hit a run-scoring sin- gle before Goodson hit his ninth homer of the season. Gary Matthews followed with his fourth homer of the year for the fifth run of the inning, all off reliever Dave LaRoche, 3-1. A run - scoring single by Mat- thews gave the Giants a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Billy Williams' 11th homer of the year tied the score in the top of the sixth, but Goodson's solo shot in the bot- tom half of the inning put Stn Francisco back in front 2-1.
