From wire Service Reports DETROIT - After all the old men in Tiger, uniforms had per- formed heroic chores for the Bengals this year, Rookie Dick Sharon decided that it was his turn to get some acclaim. And acclaim he got last night as he powdered two home runs to guide the Tigers to a 5-4 de- cision over the inexplicably tough Texas Rangers. The Bengals were aided by two Ranger throwing errors to get off to the early start. Mickey Stan- ley greeted Jim Merrit, 3-4, in the first with a double. Tony Taylor sacrificed the center fielder to third and Stanley scored when last night's hero Vic Harris toss- ed Al Kaline's routine grounder wildly to first base. Sharon opened the second with a tow-bagger, moved to third on a sacrifice and scooted home when Merritt could not connect with the first sacker. Kaline added another .run in the inning with a bloop single. But for Joe Coleman the two- hitter he nursed into the seventh frame was not to last. The pesky Rangers, who refuse to die with their spikes off, made the contest -dangerously close when they crossed the plate three Summer Daily times in the frame. Rico Carty knocked in one with a single and surprising Kenny Suarez plated.- two with a clean safety. Manager Martin did what is becoming quite common in Tiger contests he went to the well for ace reliever John Hiller. Hiller responded in true fire- man form. The triumph was the seventh for Chicago over the Yankees who have yet to beat the White Sox this season. Bradford, once touted as a super star of the future, singled in the fifth inning and scored the tying run before unloading his game-winning single in the sixth. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ron Blomberg led off with a single and Graig Nettles walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Stan Bahnsen and after Thurman Munson fanned. Johnny Calison hit a sacrifice fly to score Blomberg. Bradford, hitting in his 11th straight game, led off the Chi- cago fifth with a single and Ed Herrman reached when Bernie Allen booted his grounder. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice. Eddie Leon then bounced to shortstop Gene Michael who threw to third to get Herrmann while Bradford scored the tying run. t Sax surge MINNESOTA - Luis Tiant pitched a two hitter, besting Jim Kaat's five-hitter and the Bos- ton Red Sox nipped the Minne- sota Twins 2-1 last night. Tiant walked Larry Hisle in the sec- ond and Joe Lis followed with a double to provide the Twins with half their hits and all their scor- ing. Rod Carew's single in the ninth was the other Minnesota hit. The Red * Sox gave Tiant the two runs he needed in the third. Doubles by Darrell Evans and Mario Guerrero produced one run and Luis Aparicio followed with a single for the other. 0's bumped BALTIMORE - Lee Stanton's third home run of the game, a two-run shot in the 10th inning, carried the California Angels to a 10-8 victory over the Balti- more Orioles last night.
