The Knicks had to withstand a furious second half baker rally in order to clinch their title, the second in four years for the Red Holtzman coachs squad. The Lakers were a crippled bunch and although they led at 'halftime by two points, they could not keep us with the fleet- footed Knicks. Jerry West, hob- bled with two pulled hamstrings could not even edge into douale figures. The Michigan nine travels westward and southerly in pur- suit of the Big Ten crown. All the information is available on page 11. And when physical mishap did not keep the Lakers down, fools did. Lakers Bill Bridges, _il Goodrich and Hap Hairston could not handle the Knick forwavds and were in deep foul troubl' vis the second half. Surprisingly with the offensise punch of Goodrich and West om, Wilt Chamberlain did not go to the bucket. But even so, the scrappy Lakers playing for pride brought the score to 86-82 at one point but could not further cut that margin. 6-4 win clinches 18th title CHICAGO R) - - Yvan Cournoyer's record break- 15th goal of the entire play- off series broke a 4-4 tie in the final period and swept the Montreal Canadiens to the Stanley Cup champion- ship with a 6-4 victory over the Chicago Black Hawks last night. The Canadiens, who reached the cup finals by eliminating Buffalo and Philadelphia, took the title series four games to two. A record goal scoring series for six games with a two team total of 56, ended with the Ca- nadiens erasing an early 2-0 Chicago lead and Hawk Pit Mar- tin's final three goal hat trick. After a sizzling second period in which Montreal finally moved ahead 3-2 and Chicago twice rallied for ties at 3-3 and 4-4, Cournoyer turned the tide at 8:13 of the third and final period with a scoring poke after a rebound of a shot by Jacques Lemaire which caromed back off the glass partition behind the Hawk goal. It gave Cournoyer his 15th goal in 16 playoff games, shatter- ing the record of 14 set by team- mate Frank Mahovlich in 20 playoff games in 1971. Cournoyer also got two as- sists, the last on Marc Tardiff's power play goal which wrapped up the spirited contest at 12:42 in the final period. TONY ESPOSITO (31) sweeps the puck away with Henri Richard hanging on his shoulder, Tony's antics were. to no avail as the powerful Canadiens swamped the Black Hawks for the coveted Stanley Cup.
