Page Two THE SUMMER DAILY Tuesday, June 26, 1973 JAY SHARBUTT: Television in NEW YORK (P) -- Public tele- vision's gavel-to-gavel broadcasts of the Watergate hearings may be a boon for local stations. But they're causing a financial pinch for the outfit actually covering the hearings - the National Pub- lic Affairs Center for Television. "The irony of the whole thing is that the fantastic success of the Watergate hearings on tele- vision is going to hurt NPACT considerably," says James Kar- ayn, president of the organiza- tion. HE SAYS a search for addi- tional money is under way and teve tonight NOTE: Taped coverage of the Water- tate heaings may pe-ept regair prgramminn same channels this evening. 1:00 2.4 7 ii 13 New- 9Coeurtship f Eddie's Father 20 Stagecoach west 24 ABC News-Smith Reasonere 50 Flistones 56(Cha-ew Way-Cooking 6:30 2 11 CBS News-Walter Cronkite- 4 13 NBC News-John Chancellor 7 ABC News-Slih/Resye 9 Dreasof eannie-Comedy 24 D VkVan Dyke-Comedy 50 GilligasislIsad .56 lHow DosVsurChildrenGrow ? 7:002 Truth or Consequences 7 To Tell the Truth 9 BJevely Hllil~lies liITs Tell the Tulh 13 What's My Line? 20 Nanny and theProfessor 24 Bowling for Dollars 50 I Love Lucy 56 French Chef 7:30 2 11 Baseball-The Tigers meet the Red Sox at Boston 4 You Asked fort 7 Price is Right 9 Wacky World of Jonathan Winters 13 Truth or Casquences 20 Rifleman 24 Adventurer 50 fiogan's Heese 56 Natralists-P'aile 8:00 4 13 Movie-"Baffled!" Center officials say it costs the center about $12,000 each day to televise the hearings live and to tape them for rebroadcast at night. They say the coverage has pro- duced a tremendous viewer res- ponse - more than 70,000 letters, most of them approving - but it also has cut sharply into the cen- ter's budget for its own program- ming. THEY SAY there's just enough money in the till to continue the coverage through June. After that, they'll have to dip into funds they otherwise would use for series or special events pro- grams next fall. They say that money would come from $800,000 the Corpor- ation for Public Broadcasting has promised the center for the fis- cal year starting July 1, as well as from $1.5 million they hope to get from the Ford Foundation. Karayn says that, without ad- ditional funds, the center will have to cancel one of four ser- ies it has planned for next fall. HIS ORGANIZATION produces the coverage of the hearings for the Public Broadcasting Service but cannot seek public donations for itself. PBS officials say the evening broadcasts are shown on an av- erage of 90 percent of those sta- tions. And scores of them use the pauses in the center's hearing coverage to ask viewers for do- nations. AS OF YESTERDAY, the res- ponse - either by phone-in pled- ges or contributions by mail - had netted WNET here $45,000 in cash since the May 17 start of the hearings, according to station officials. At WPBT in Miami, officials said pledges just through June 6 came to $51,905, with $23,417 of it actually in hand and more ex- pected. At San Francisco's KQ- ED, viewers have pledged $60,- 891; station officials estimate the actual cash take probably will come to about $45,000. PBS, which like the center says viewer reaction to coverage of the hearings has been excellent, says it has no figures on how much cash viewers have sent in throughout the United States. Karayn estimates it at $750,000. STARTS FRIDAY etn a modern evttg - "SOUND OF MUSIC" The wit, humor and soul of the living word.
