%Page Twelve THE SUMMER DAILY Saturday, June 23, 1973 Bengals nipped by NY rally; slide deeper into AL oblivion By The Associated Press NEW YORK - Bobby Mtrcer's two-ron double capped a three- rn New York counter-rally in the seventh inning and lifted the streaking Yankees to a 5-4 vic- tory over the Detroit Tigers last night. The Tigers pounded Fritz Pe- terson and relief ace Sparky Lyle for four rens in the top of the seventh but Thurman Munson opened the Yankees' half with his ninth home run of the season, cutting the lead to 4-3 and chas- ing Jim Perry. Fred Scherman allowed a one- out single to Horace Clarke and a two-out hit to Matty Alou be- fore Murcer doubled to deep left- center for the runs that sealed the Yankees' fifth, victory in a row and Detroit's fourth straight setback. The Yankees led 2-0 when Fritz Peterson gave way to Lyle after one-out singles by Dick Sharon and Ike Brown. Aurelio Rodri- guez' double to short left drove in the first run. After an inten- tional walk to Mickey Stanley, Taylor's single to right tied the score but Johnny Callison cut down Rodriguez at the plate for the second out. The runners, however, moved up a base on the throw and Al Kaline lashed Lyle's next pitch for a tie-breaking two-run single. The Yankees nicked Perry for two runs in the second. Murcer led off with a pop fly double and scored on a single by Ron Blom- berg, who took second on the throw to the plate. Blomberg came home on a double by Graig Nettles. Earlier it was announced that veteran relief pitcher Bob Miller was sold to Detroit on waivers by the San Diego Padres. Since joining San Diego in April, Miller had appeared in 18 games but had no record nor any saves with the Padres. Miller, 33, worked 30% onnings with San Diego, and had a 4.11 earned run average. Say Hey PITTSBURGH - Willie Mays slogged a three-run double in the second inning and John Milner followed with his ninth home run of the season to power the New York Mets to a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. A lealoff single by Jim Fre- gosi, a walk to Ron Hodges and an infield hit by pitcher George Stone, 3-2, set up Mays' bases- clearing shot to right-center field off Steve Blass, 3-5. Two outs later, Milner homered into the right field seats. Terrific TOrrez MONTREAL, - M i k e Torrez checked Philadelphia on seven hits, one of them a first-inning home run by Del Unser, to carry the Montreal Expos to a 4-2 vic- tory over Steve Carlton and the Phillies last night. The Expos tied the score in the bottom of the first on a walk to Ron Woods, an infield out and Hal Breeden's single, and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on two walks and John Boccabella's single. Montreal qnocked Carlton, 7-8, out in the sixth. Torrez led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice ant scored on Woods' single. After Carlton issued his fifth walk of the game to Clyde Mashore, Billy Wilson relieved him and was greeted by Mike Jorgensen's run-scoring p i n c h single. Hammerin' Hank SAN DIEGO - Hank Aaron of Atlanta his the 692nd home run of his major league career last night in the first inning of the Braves' game against the San Diego Padres. The homer, a leadoff shot in the second inning off Randy Jones, making his first start in the majors, was the 19th of the season for Aaron, putting him within 22 of Babe Ruth's record 714.
