With the score tied 4-4, Willie Horton led off the eighth with a single. Wood, 14-6, retired the next two batters, but then How- ard, the Tigers' designated hit- ter, belted his firsthhome run of the season into the spper left field seats. Chicago came back with one run in the ninth on one-out sin- gles by Pat Kelly, Dick Allen and Bill Melton. But reliever John Hiller, 3-2, retired Carlos May on a grounder and struck out Rick Reichardt to end the game. The Tigers had taken a 4-2 lead by scoring three runs in the third on a run-scoring double by Al Kaline, a sacrifice fly by Bill Freehan and a run-scoring single by Ike Brown. But Chicago tied the score with a pair of runs in the sixth on two- out singles by Ed Herrmann, Eddie Leon, pinch hitter Tony Muser and John Jeter. The game was delayed for 58 minutes by rain following the sixth inning. Howard's blast was especially comforting to Bengal boosters as he had been so fooled by Wood knucklers in his previous two trips to the plate. In one swing he had seemed to go around twice. The victory gave the Tigers a tie for the first place slot in the American League East, pend- ing the outcome of the Yankee game with Oakland on the West Coast. Earl homers BALTIMORE - Earl Williams' two-run homer in the ninth inning Summer Daily Sports '95 per cent sure' Howe reveals Aero contract terms DETROIT /)-Former Detroit Red Wing superstar Gordie Howe confirmed yesterday long-rumored reports that he has been offered a $1 million package to sign with the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association. Howe, who would become the first member of the National Hockey League Hall of Fame to jump to the WHA, said he has been offered a $500,000 bonus plus another half-million spread over the next four years. Aero General Manager Jim Smith said only minor issues such as moving expenses, insurance program, endorsement and promotional games. "It's not the amount we're going to pay Gordie that we're talking about now," Smith said. "It's how we're going to pay him." broke up a tie and led the Balti- more Orioles to a 6-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals last night. Tommy Davis led off the ninth with a single on a bad-hop grounder, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Terry Crow- ley fouled out, but Williams fol- lowed with his homer, his eighth of the year, to left off reliever Doug Bird, 1-3. The Royals scored three runs in the seventh to tie the score 4-4. Baltimore starter Jim Palmer walked Fran Healy and Paul Schaal followed with a triple. Grant Jackson, who had retired 17 consecutive batters in his last four relief appearances, replaced Palmer and gave up a home run ball to Cookie Rojas on an 0-2 pitch. Amos Otis hit a solo homer for Kansas iCty and Bobby Grich had a bases-empty homer for the Orioles. So does Walt CLEVELAND -Walt Williams and John Ellis smacked home runs to power the Cleveland Indians to a 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers last night. Williams unloaded his first homer of the season with one aboard in the third, and Ellis added his two-run shot, No. 2 of the year, in the sixth. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead when leadoff batter Dave Nelson ripped his fourth home run off starter and winner Milt Wilcox, 4-3. The Indians tied the game in the third on Buddy Bell's run- -scoring triple and went ahead on Williams' homer. The Rangers regained the lead, 4-3, in the sixth on four singles and two hit batsmen, but Ellis's homer in the bottom of the inning put Cleveland back on top tr stay. Billy round trips HOUSTON - Rick Reuschel pitched a three-hitter and Billy Williams blasted a two-run hom- er, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 3-0 victory over the Houston Astros last night. Reuschel, 7-4, pitched hitless ball until Cesar Cedeno led off the seventh inning with a single. Lee May singled Cedeno to third, but Doug Rader bounced into a double play to end the only threat off the Chicago right-hander. Reuschel and Houston's Ken Forsch, 6-6, were lockedd in a scoreless duel until the fifth when Chicago scored its winning runs. Don Kessinger doubled and Reuschel was safe on a sacrifice bunt after Forsch threw the ball late to third in an attempt to get Kessinger. Rick Monday bounced into a double play as Kessinger scored,
