/ Gophers slam
OMAHA - The Minnesota Gophers stayed alive in the Col-
lege World Series by whipping Georgia Southern, 6-2. The Go-
phers were edged by perennial strong Arizona State by a 3-0
count. Dave Winfield and Tom Buttner smacked round-trippers
for the Gophers.
On Ice
Al Arbour, one of only a few men to wear glasses in NHL
action, was named coach of the inept New York Islanders yes-
terday. Arbour, who once held the same position with the St. Louis
r. , 4xBlues, called his appointment "the greatest challenge of my
-life." . Gordie Howe has yet to ink a Houston Aero contract
- And Henri Richard will play two more years with the
r Habs . . .
Avery ties the Knot
Dashing Avery Brundage, 85, will wed a German princess of
the tender age of 37. Brundage yesterday ended world-wide
rumors when he announced his engagement to Mariann PrincesS
Reuss. The former president of the International Olympic Com-
mittee did not indicate the date of the blessed event nor did he
reveal what athletic shoe his bride-to-be favors.
