Saturdav June 9. 1973 THE SUMMER DAILY Page Eleven . ._ .,,-.e- Gabriel for five LOS ANGELES (A)-The Los Angeles Rams traded disenchant- ed-Roman Gabriel to the Phila- delphia Eagles in a one-for-five swap yesterday that could help both teams if the veteran quar- terback's arm remains sound. In return for Gabriel, the Na- tional Football League's most valuable player in 1969, the Rams received wide receiver Harold Jackson, running back Tony Baker and three draft choices. The draft choices will be No. 1 in both 1974 and 1975 and the, No. 3 pick in 1975. The trade. LIBERTY ANN ARBOR, MICH. traded Eagles returns a No. 1 draft choice for next year since the Rams' when George Allen was coach, had traded away that selection. Gabriel suffered tendonitis in his throwing elbow last season and it hampered him most of the way, although in the final game he declared he was phys- ically fit. The Rams however traded de- fensive end Coy Bacon and sec- ond string running back Bob Thomas to San Diego for quar- terback Jahn Hadl and alienated Gabriel, the 32-year-old from North Carolina State who had spent 11 seasons with Los An- geles. He charged his contract was void and the multi-year pact calls reportedly for $125,000 a year. Then his Superior Court suit charging that fact was dropped and he went to Phila- delphia to talk business. A Rams spokesman said Ga- briel's contract would be trans- ferred intact to Philadelphia and any changes in it would have to be negotiated by the player and the club. Gabriel and the Eagles announced an accord last Friday without giving details. Physical failures of the veteran quarterback played a part in the 6-7-1 losing record of the Rams last season, their first year under the ownership of Carroll Rosen- bloom, who traded his Baltimore Colts for the West Coast club. Enforcer First base umpire John McSherry appears to have enforced his call by knocking down Chicago Cub pitcher Milt Pappas yesterday at Wrigley Field. Actually, McSherry is calling Cincinnati's Pete Rose (not shown) out after Pappas slid into first with the ball. Cub Pat Borque seems to be catching the foot of Pappas at left.
