Detroit's Joe Coleman won his 10th game against three losses, pitching 6% innings despite con- trol troubles and back-to-back home runs by Jim Holt and George Mitterwald in the fourth. Danny Walton added a third solo homer for the Twins. Kaat, now 6-3, left after retir- ing only one of the first seven batters. Tony Taylor led off with a line single on the first pitch of the game, and Stanley hit the next delivery 378 feet into the left field stands. TWINS THIRD baseman Steve Braun misplayed Al Kaline's in- field grounder, Willie Horton sin- gled and the two advanced when a pitch got by catcher Mitter- wald. Designated hitter Frank Howard, who knocked i three runs in two at bats, followed with a bloop dotble to rightfield to score both runners. Detroit added another run in f f{ the third on singles by Horton and Bill Freehan, with Horton scoring from third on Howard's ground out. After the Twins closed it to 5-2, the Tigers scored twice more in the fifth. AP Photo Singer hums NEW YORK - Ken Berry iple Crown hit a three-run homer and Bill Singer, with ninth-inning relief, posted his ninth victory, lead- ing the California Angels to a 5-2 triumph over the Yankees last night. Singer, 9-2, allowed two sin- gles and a run in the first in- ning and then retired 13 consecu- tive batters until Thurman Mun- son opened the sixth with a dou- ble and scored on Horace Clarke's single., The Angels ripped into loser Mike Kekich in the third when Billy Garbarkewitz and Vada Pinson singled and Berry sliced his first home run of the season into the first row of the right field stands. THEY ADDED two unearned runs off Fred Beene in the fifth after Pinson singled and Berry reached on an error by second baseman Horace Clarke. The runners advanced on Frank Robinson's 440-foot fly to left- center. Bob Oliver was purpose- ly passed and Mike Epstein struck out but Jerry DaVanon drilled a double past third base. Pirates power PITTSBURGH-Richie Hebner drove in four runs with a hamer, double and sacrifice fly and Willie Stargell and Manny San- guillen added homers, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 9-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last night. Sports of the Daily, page 11 The Reds touched Pirate start- er Steve Blass for three first- inning runs, but the Pirates went ahead with a five-run third keyed by a two-run homer by Stargell, his 15th, and a two-run double by Hebner. SANGUILLEN and Hebner hit consecutive homers in the fifth before the Reds sent Blass to the showers with two runs in the seventh on two singles sand- wiched around a walk, a force out and an error by shortstop Jack Hernandez. Hebner drove in his fourth run with a sacrifice fly in the sev- enth and Bob Robertson added some insurance with a run-scor- ing single later in the inning. Wood shelled MILWAUKEE - George Scott drove in two runs with a home run and a double off Wilbur Wood, ruining the knuckleballer's bid for his 14th victory and pow- ering the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox last night. Wood, who had won five deci- sions in a row and 12 of his last 13, was shelled for 11 hits in five complete innings and took his fourth defeat.
