Yesterday marked the end of an era in Michigan athletics when Don Weir's retirement as ticket director became official. Starting today former hockey mentor Al Renfrew will head the department. Weir served some 26 years in the athletic office and all those who know him, will surely miss his presence and wish him well in the future. Turf talk WASHINGTON-The National Football League Players Asso- ciation (NFLPA) has asked the Federal Consumer Safety Com- mission to ban further installation of artificial turf on pro, college, and high school gridirons pending a study on its rela- tion to injuries. Edward Garvey, executive director of NFLPA, asked Com- mission Chairman Richard Simpson to establish safety regula- tions for synthetic turf. The players, said Garvey, "are concerned not only about their own careers being shortened by playing on artificial grass, but also for the thousands of high school and college athletes who must on synthetic turfs., Indy tracks Gordon Johneock, a native of Hastings, Mich., was officially declared the winner of the ill-fated Indianapolis 500. Johncock will receive over $200,000 for his efforts . . . Graham McRae of New Zealand was named rookie of the year in the race. McRae finished 16th . . . Andy Granatelli, owner of the winning ear, threatened to pull out of future USAC competition unless reforms were made. He wants to reduce the speeds and the hazard of fuel fires, like the kind that seriously injured one of Granatelli's drivers, Swede Savage. Baseball notes Pitcher Rob Gardner was dealt from Oakland to Milwaukee . . Frank Robinson is giving serious consideration to becom- ing the major's first black manager. The Oakland lefthander cut down the first 20 Yankees with a blazing fastball until Matty Alou broke up his no-hit spell with a two-out single up the middle in the seventh inning. Supported by Jackson's two-run triple in a three-run first inning and the right fielder's solo homer into the upper deck in right field in a three-run fifth, Holtzman, 10-2, breezed into the eighth with a six-run lead. But the first batter of the eighth, designated hitter Jim Ray Hart, belted a line' drive off Holtzman's left leg that knocked the pitcher down.
