Saturday, May 26, 1973 THE SUMMER DAILY Page Eleven " Saturday, May 26, 1973 THE SUMMER DAILY Page Eleven It's nd 500 t By CHUCK BLOOM When Speedway president Tony Holman barks out those famous first words, "Gentlemen, start your engines!" 33 of the world's best drivers become as previous winner Bobby Unser stated "basket cases." So it will be this Monday morning at 11 a.m. When a Cadillac Eldorado driven by former winner Jim Rathmann leads 33 of the world's fastest cars around the two-and-a-half mile asphalt oval for the 57th running of the Indianapolis 500, the premier spectacle in auto racing. For perhaps the last year, this Memorial Day event will be held on the designated holiday. Due. to television and the calendar, the organizers of the Indy 500 have decided to hold the race on the Sunday prior to Memorial Day. But this year more than 335,000 racing enthusiasts will jam the ancient brickyard to witness a wide-open race. With the ears failing to reach the magic 200- mph mark in qualifying earlier this month, nevertheless a new pole position record was set. Johnny Rutherford of Fort Worth, Texas, qualified with a rousing 198.413 mph, with a single lap over 199 mph. However, Rutherford is not favored to win the Classic. That pre-race honor goes to last year's victor Mark Donohue driving a car owned by Detroiter Roger Penske, who yesterday bought up the bankrupt Michigan Inter- national Speedway for $150,000. Donohue will be on the outside of the front row with the man in the middle, Bobby Unser, con- sidered the other driver to beat. Unser won the event in 1968 and his brother Al, also entered this year, took the crown twice. Other veterans of victory lane who are competing include 1969 victor Mario Andretti and three- time winner A. J. Foyt, going for a record fourth Indy win. But Foyt is starting far back in the pack in eighth row and not since 1966 when Graham Hill did it has any driver come from beyond. the sixth row to win. 603 east fiberty Theatre Phone 665-6290 "D Z LIG ime again!
